I think you are being overly optimistic about these indictments having no effect on these poker clients’ services in the UK and elsewhere abroad. The FBI and the DOJ can ask our government for the assets of alleged ‘criminals’ to be seized by own authorities in accordance with treaties we have with the USA and international law.

They can base this request on many things such as these operations are using the ‘proceeds of crime’, or they possess laundered money, or even vital evidence against the companies needs to be seized e.g servers, databases etc.

It is unlikely our authorities will allow a company that is 'alleged' to have commited crimes against the US governemnt to continue to operate freely here.

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/quadjacks-black-friday listen to this guys, live stream talking about it.

I withdrew $300 eariler and have more on FTP, do u think i should withdraw my remaining $800? It sounds like our money is safe with FTP and stars moving everything to .co.uk or .eu but i fear if everyone withdraws surely they are gonna get real low on funds
  • edited April 2011
Also traffic doesnt seem too bad...
currently 157,645 players on stars, normally ~200K just a matter how much they are gonna take in legal proceedings
  • edited April 2011
I think if it was me, I would get my money out if possible

    the reasoning being,
    1) yes they might pay out now but they will run low on funds as some will be invested (as already pointed out),
    2) once they get low, if they get hit by massive fines, where will the money come from, especially if they ahve already used there emergency contingency
    3) always a chance the site could just shut down and have everything possessed at 'proceeds of crime'
  • edited April 2011

SURELY if they couldn't pay out to non US players, they (or someone else) would stop/warn the players.

No way would they allow players to continue playing. There would be warnings everywhere? They would have to be closed down immediately? By law?

Really tempted to deposit and play some tournys as I keep hearing about these massive overlays, but then people put doubts in my mind.

The official line from Stars is that we will get our money right???????

Surely they wouldn't be allowed to say that if it wasn't true.

I don't know why anyone is even thinking about whether they should get their money out. This is all up in the air and will be for some time. If you can withdraw then do it. Whether you will actually have the money credited to your account is debateable but hopefully it will go through OK. The longer you leave it the more risk at this moment. If it all turns out well you can always put it back.

No but I believe that somebody would stop them saying it if it wasn't true.

Doesn't anybody have a responsibility to inform/protect the public?

    This = sense

Noah from 2+2 has just said in a live stream from the states that it's possible that even Visa and Mastercard could end up being implicated and that this is just the tip if the iceberg.

I dunno, when V festival tickets went on sale there were warnings on every radio station and news bulliten on TV that people were selling duff tickets, and that you shouldn't buy them unless they were from a reliable source.

    Public awareness I guess.

Maybe someone in the know in the UK could help us out, more people in the UK play poker on American sites, than attend the V festival! And for wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy more money too.

     Advice ftw.

Absolute have just suspended ALL deposits, withdrawals and transfers until further notice.

If you read the indictment it says this:

"The defendants shall forfeit to the United States....All the defendants' rights, title, and interests in the following entities and businesses:

    1. Pokerstars,
    2. Full Tilt Poker,
    3. Absolute Poker,
    4. Ultimate Bet,
    5. Oldford Group ltd.,
    6. Rational Entertainment enterprises ltd.,
    7. Pyr software ltd.,
    8. Stelekram ltd.,
    9. Sphene International ltd.,
    10. Tiltware ltd., "

This means it's not just the fines they impose - they intend to take everything - ''Title and interests''

In Response to Re: DOJ indicts U.S. poker sites:
Poker players in the US do pay tax. It doesnt matter one bit if one country pays tax and the other doesnt, different laws in different places. In fact the UK is one of the rare places where you dont pay taxes on gambling winnings. A lot of europe do. This isnt about taxes. Its about the 3 pokersites still providing service to the US through illegal means. Those pokersites want legalisation and to be taxed so that they can operate freely in the US. Obviously a lot of people dont want this to happen, like the big vegas casinos and anti gambling religious groups/politicians using it as a way to garner support by being anti-online gambling. This has nothing to do with other pokersites who dont operate in the US so there will be no huge knock on effect apart from maybe migration of players to different sites. Its the US gov going after the sites who continued to operate in the US after the UIGEA. Most likely whats happening is the government is shutting down these sites for a payday and then will introduce state regulated gambling where they recieve most of the profits. PS, FTP and UB have no defense don. They broke the law by using illegal means to pay out to players. Sky etc dont allow  US players so how could PS and co use that as a defense? This doesnt affect UK laws in the slightest. THe only way your gonna notice the difference is if you play on those sites, and the difference will be a lack of US players. The sites arent shutting down and will still offer play to the rest of the world. This only concerns the US. The FBI/DoJ cant change the laws of other countries.
