Charities are one of my biggest annoyances these days, yes a lot of them do a lot of good in a lot of places, but so many of them are just another way to make money, I had a few friends who used to do call centre work for a few different charities, when they left uni,  on a good week they could earn up to £500 just in commission from getting people to sign up for direct debits and arranging other people to do sponsorships etc, I'm sure i remeber last year the CEO of Barnados (or something like that) earned a £500,000 bonus because he hit a few targets in terms of raising money.... I tend to just give to local animal charities these days as you can see what the money goes on.....

I agree with you Jordz, it is quite worrying when I hear about stuff like that.

I just re-assure myself that all these things that happen must be +ev for the charity?

Say a charity receives £100 a week total via donations.

It employs 10 people to work for them to try and increase the amount of donations, and they are successful, each person bringing in £510 worth of donations per week.

They take a wage of £500.

The people/animals/research that benefit from the charity now receive a total of £200 donations, whereas it was previously only £100.

It's like in poker, there are often many profitable lines we can take. With the example you used, it's definitely not the most profitable line, not even close. But it is +ev.

    ---

    Reminds me of http://reg-charity.org/

I'm too lazy to read about it, I trust it aims to combat the problems you mention above.

"Did you know that some charities are hundreds of times more effective than others when reducing suffering in the world? We try to maximize expected value when reducing the suffering in the world."

Will probably stick to this one in future.

    ------

No pokerz again last night, too tired.

Not a problem, just maximising the 'chill' levels on the 3 chill days.

Back to it today, probably gonna ease in now with half hour of nl6 regular tables.

    Goal is 2,500 hands total.

Unofficial goal = start clearing the house of all meat.

Going to be doing an online shop on Friday, to stock up on loads of veggie stuff ready for the challenge start on Monday.

Any reccommendations on good specialised veggie products?

    In before "veg"

But owt that will replace the nutritional value of meat?

Owt that will limit the amount I crave meat? (if I do at all, I'm anticipating it being quite easy)

Any easy veggie snacks? (I don't cook 'properly' much. Fast stuff is good!)

ty. GL all on the tablez heading into the weekend.

I was bracing myself for stuff like this.

The Lambster has saved the day with an invaluable nugget of info, apparently Bisto is fine.

    Suddenly looks 10x easier <3

    Poker.

    Done 400 hands @ 6nl.

    Lost four dollars.

Feeling awful, will be going back to sleep shortly. Health upswing of a fortnight ago is long gone.   :(

If I told you how unhealthy I'd been for the last 20 years you'd soil yourself. If you think your drinking was bad..

Even one day off the sauce and I feel amazing.

Thanks Bonk, and that's awesome news about your own changes getting going :)

The highlighted bit is the goal, bet it's pretty awesome when u wake up feeling like that.

Keep waiting for it to happen :(

    re the docs again....

I've been on the meds about 6 weeks, I was told to expect changes after around 4, and there was a slight improvement.

Since then there's been a sharp downswing, but I'll see if it goes away before getting back in touch w/ the doc.

Will do 2 full months, she wants me re-tested after 4 so it sounds like she expects it to take a while to fully work.

Thats what I keep clinging on to anyway.

Thornton @ 11/10 ez money here btw ;)

Yeh but I'm not bothered about saving a cow for 1 day.  Need less of em anyway innit.
    Posted by DOHHHHHHH
Only reason we have cows is to feed humans! Eating less meat would mean less cows would be bred :)

The way I see it is like this: We won the lottery when we born simply by being human (obviously doubly so the fact we are a human in a first world country) - but imagine what it would be like to be born any number of farm animals where there sole purpose in life is to be enslaved and killed at a young age for consumption? Anyone that has spent time with an animal knows that they are sentient and have a range of emotions so to inflict un-neccessary suffering on them does not seem right at all.

We have an "amazing" ability to detach ourselves from these things though. Not just that but we have been brought up in a way where it's accepted and the social norm to eat meat. My parents fed me meat and that was that... I knew subconsciously that they were animals but I just saw it as food and completely normal to eat. The propaganda of the meat industry is huge but most of us don't even realise it - what depresses me the most is seeing a children's menu in a place and everything containing meat (usually accompied with chips) with maybe the only veggie option being a cheese and tomato pizza.

Humans are selfish. Well; animals are too.  But we also like to do things to help other people. Some more than others; is it selfless? Maybe a part of it is. But we do feel good about ourselves when we do something to help others.

We're also lazy. If we can do something to help with minimal involvement on our part than great. Giving £2 to charity? Easy. On the other extreme: Going to Syria to help out the refugees in some form or other? Incredibly difficult. I'm in incredible admiration to people like Alan Henning (RIP) - However, not wanting to detract anything from what him and others do/have done: Would you do it if you had a great job and in general felt successful in life? Or would you only do it because you felt you had little purpose in life and so wanted to do something to give you a purpose and help others at the same time? The less we value our current life, the more likely we are to want to get involved in something to help others.

For me, becoming veggie was relatively easy; before I met my GF it wouldn't have been because I thought I didn't like any veg - now I love it! And the fact there are meat substitutes everywhere is again a huge help; without that, I think I would have craved meat too much. Being vegan on the other hand is a lot more difficult. Sooo many things contain dairy products that it's ridiculous. My lack of cooking ability (unless it concerns veggie full english) just makes it impossible because there isn't much in the way of vegan ready meals.

Anyway, that's enough of the rambling :P I just had to post it now before I forgot half of what I was going to say!

Another fail of a day today :(

(great way to start a diary entry, I bet you'ze can't wait to read on :D )

For the last few days it seems the only reason I wake up is to eat.

Within 2 hours of waking I was already looking forward to a nap, which whiped out the whole of the afternoon, 2pm ----> 5pm.

Up, eat, and now I'm ready for bed again :D

Anyway the purpose of the update, is I did manage to play some poker, around 2 x 300 hand sessions.

It's really hard to motivate myself when feeling rubbish, so it doesn't take much to make me quit the session eaither.

Results dictated by 2 big hands, as they will be over tiny samples, both of which went against me.

The first one may be interesting, it's certainly a non-standard line. I think

    Seat 5: Dogh ( $3.44 USD )
    Seat 6: Mnogoryk ( $11.79 USD )
    Seat 1: MotorolaMpx ( $3.08 USD )
    Seat 4: PeteGibbons99 ( $10 USD )
    Seat 2: do 63 ( $22.88 USD )

Utg villain is a very solid reg, probably 1 of the tighter ones. I have 2k hands on him and he plays 18/14 with 5% 3b. Only 8% vpip from utg.

If I 3bet him sb v utg he isn't going to make many, if any mistakes, so I thought I'd take a chance on the short stack in the BB doing something aggressive. If not, meh, we can do things post flop.

Any thoughts on my river x/bomb?

I looked at the hand after, and I'm not a fan of it anymore, due to how much AK I block.....

    ------

2nd big pot was just tilting. Like I don't know what the guy is doing.

He hadn't got out of line at all before this hand, I've never seen him before but he's on 3/4 of my tables and seems fairly abc over small sample.

I am small blind v his BB. 130xbb deep.

    ** Dealing River ** [ 6d ]
PeteGibbons99 shows [ As, Ts ]high card Ace.
    Bodling shows [ 2h, 3h ]a pair of Threes.

    I guess good read, "bro".

Pretty annoying to work hard to get the graph going up feeding on small pots, cbets, thin value bets, tough/thin river calls etc and then just get crushed by big hands going against me all the time.

I don't normally moan about run bad but I'm tired and grumpy so it effects me more :)

Ending on 666 hands wasn't intentional.

    Probably apropriate though.

Dollar sites owe me alot of ev @ 10!

Out for the day again tomorrow, hopefully I feel in the mood to play my first proper session of the week tomorrow night, get this bankroll moving forward again !!!!

    Roll = £1094.46

Hand 1, is he so tight that he wouldn't bluff catch your many missed draws?  Hard to get value from an uber-nit, but given the line think you have to go for it.

Hand 2 is why you will always will in the long term.

    Hope you're feeling better soon.
  • edited October 2015

    Thanks Mike.

The hand histories don't seem to be going down very well in here, even my posts about cricket get more replies.

    Appreciate you giving your opinion.

When I looked at the potential calling range of the villain in hand 1 it became clear I'd made a pretty big error due to all the combos of AK I block, which are probably the main hand we are looking to get value from.

Even if he calls AK all the time, there are only 6 combos of AK left, whereas there are 10 combos of sets (and he has them all)....

If we throw in KTs, it takes us to 9 combos of stuff we beat, still not enough to make it a value shove against 10 combos of hands that beat us, and he probably folds AK too so we should remove some of them and it looks even more bleak.

So yah, I think just calling is best.

    (he had 4 sevens)

    ------

    More misery today.

Didn't end up going out due to stuff outside my control, so I played a little poker this morning and lost.

I was really annoyed at myself getting JJ in bvb against some reg.

    He 3b to 12xbb over my 3x open and then 5bet to 47xbb over my 26xbb 4bet....

Like, how bad does he think I am if he's trying to make me fall for that?

    Well I did. wp him

    JJ < AA.

I was annoyed and tired again and obv quit.

    Slept all afternoon again.

Watched a cracking rugby league final, followed by an even better darts final, then fired up another 888 10nl session.

Ran worse than I can remember running for a long time.

I admit my confidence in these games is very low.

My motivation to play them due to physical handicaps atm is very low.

My ability to play anywhere close to my A game for any length of time is very low.

Add in the deck being cruel to me and I literally cannot win.

It's just impossible. I can't grind through it either,

It's probably another nut low for the diary in terms of morale, enthusiasm and confidence.

    #Whenwillitend.

I doubt anyone is interested, but I'm now running 20 buyins below ev over 33,000 hands at 10nl.

I really don't want to moan about run bad, but I think most people would struggle to overcome that.

And I guess, if I really had to, I can turn that into a positive when I'm still up 9 buyins over that sample overall.

    ----

Anyway yet another planned poker night ends prematurely and I retire to the pit shattered mentally and physically pre midnight.

I will try again, to try again tomorrow.

    Roll = £1067.46

    ----

Edit* on the positives, I submitted my order for 100 quids worth of veggie specific food today.

It was an interesting experience, and at times very tilting. Asda don't make it very clear what is veggie and what isn't.

My fear when taking on the challenge was always having to be overly careful about what is and isn't allowed. I cba with that. So I went with the "if it hasn't obviously got meat in it, it's fine", line.

I'm sure it'll be worth it come Monday evening and I'm tucking in to my vegetarian beetroot and goats cheese roast.

    Hype.

    Hi Dohh,

Long time reader  but don't post much.

    Just a couple of things.

IMO you are being terrible hard on yourself , you have made a really big lifestyle change and like most things these things take time. While setting targets re hands are great but while your body and mind adjusts I feel you are putting too much presure on yourself. It can't be easy to play anywhere close to your A game if you don't feel well (running below ev can't help for the mind part). Remember you saying that you don't rely on winnings for income so maybe set lower targets till you feel better.

Would comment on the cricket but being from the other side of the pond only see when we are playing in the WC.

    Feel and run better

Im from Dublin so we have a masive day of sport ahead.

France in the rugby followed by Poland in the football.
Both should be great games and hoping for a couple of good results.
Playing live last year ( think it was an APAT event ) and after a couple of hands noticed the dealer and players either side of her were looking at me and whispering while looking at one of their phones. This went on until I played a hand and actually spoke and at this point I heard in unison ah its not him. According to them I am a doppelganger for a Polish player ,they were quite disapppointed they hadn't got a star on their table. Hope we catch him on an off day today.

Yeah our neighbours up the road have been on a great run and am happy they have quailifed.

Least we're decent at egg chasing. lol :)

On a note that team sheet never filled me with confidence. I wont denie Strachan has done us alot of good, but his team selection of late IMO is very poor. We played 3 right backs the other night, Over natural centre backs and natural left backs the latter is a position which is probably our strongest in depth with some quality left backs playing in Scotland & England of Scottish nationality.

The midfield wasn't a choice I'd have made, James Forrest for example should be nowhere near the Scotland team over other optoions, including others at the club he plays for. I also slammed both players who scored pre kick off much to the laugh of uncle willie and yourself. Don't think one has performed yet at international level, while the other has 3/4 options id place ahead (Rhodes, Griffiths etc) who are foing a solid job for their club week in week out, while the one selected (Steven Fletcher) barely scores for his club.

In Response to Re: "Sit & DOHHHHHHH Diary":
In Response to Re: "Sit & DOHHHHHHH Diary" :

    haha great story.

Bet you were relieved when you found out it was something as trivial as a lookalike !

    I'd have been kakking myself.

First half of job done by the egg chasers, just tuning in to watch the footy.

I HATE the way qualifiers are structured.

But this is the rare occasion where the format creates excitement.

The very definition of a massive game.

Nervous for your lot! Mon the Irish. :)

In Response to Re: "Sit & DOHHHHHHH Diary" : Least we're decent at egg chasing. lol :)  On a note that team sheet never filled me with confidence. Question for you Donald.

    This isn't preempted .....

If you had to pick a starting 11, 6 subs, and a manager, to represent the 5 home nations, who would you pick?

No restrictions on the number of representatives from each country. Manager for the sake of this question has to be British or Irish.
