Diary of Thomas 'rolfus' Rolfe

edited April 2012 in Poker Chat
Hello People, I've recently started to read the forums on SkyPoker and heard of this diary trend rather than a blog. I like the idea of it and TommyD's Diary has been a good read so thought I would give it a crack.

I've been playing poker for about 6 years, 3 and a 1/2 of which have been as a professional. I play mostly cash games in NL Holdem and PL Omaha at the 0.25/0.5 through to 5/10 if I'm taking a shot, with the odd MTT added in which I've been lucky enough to have some good results in. I've been a bit lazy in regards to poker for basically 2010/2011 and have got back my motivation/passion for poker this year.

Goals: I set out in January to get to the 10k points mark to get Priority Club status [x] and am now trying to achieve 30k points for February (currently on 18k points for February). Other than that it's to get as good at poker as I can and hopefully the rewards come with it.

Thanks for reading, I'll try to update it as and when I play poker or have something interesting to talk about. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Tom

lol run better on with Anna and tikay nice :)

I play snooker on mondays, used to be ok but dont really practice anymore. Whats your highest break? either practice or in a match? Do you play in any leagues?

Nice handicap in golf i used to be good up until i started playing snooker then got bored of it so prob play every few years now barely break 100 :(

As you have soooo many hobbies how do you get the motivation to go to the gym? i have this probem i have a gym @ home but would rather be playing poker/snooker/ps3/out and doing other things but i need to get back into it.

Yeah I'm pretty happy with that combo of presenters....beauty and wisdom!!

I've only really played snooker with mates, my highest break is somewhere between 30-35. Small brag: My cousin is Neil Robertson

I've always been on and off with going to the gym but the last 4months I've been going pretty consistently and it's all because I've now got a gym partner...makes you unable to sack of the gym because your now letting someone else down.

Welcome to the forum and diary fold Tom.  I look forward to reading this.

I must say on the tables we've hit what is now called a bit of a 'meta game.'  (In the old days this was just called 'have played a lot together').  I am finding this enjoyable, stimulating and frightfully tricky.  I look forward to it continuing.

If Sky run another rake race for 60k points would you have a crack at it and do you think you could do it?

But now I know that you know.....

:) Yeah I'm enjoying it as I want to get as good as I can be and don't mind taking on some tougher competition.

The reward for the 60k points is very good. In theory I could do it as I can play up to about 11 tables on sky and can do it for a couple hours at a time but thats in theory...

I know Beaneh and lol_raise did it and they were pretty burnt out/came out with injurys lol

If the promotion came along again I would seriously consider it but would prob be 50/50 I take it on and then 30/70 that I actually managed to do it

I am pretty sure no one with a girlfriend could do the 60k points challenge. They take up too much time. Women that is, obviously not poker...

Look forward to reading this diary .

Would you mind telling us a little about your poker day.

On an average day, would you get up at 11, play 11-3  then have a break and play 8pm-12 maybe.   (depending on weather your busy or not).  Or do u just play as and when you feel like it ?

Im guessing you play almsot every Sunday and aim for a big tourne bink?   Do you have saturdays off?   etc..

    Thanks in Advance

Just played a session for about 1hr15min. Was feeling a bit tired and lacked intensity which I feel is very important as if your not out there looking to gain any edge possible then your costing yourself money. So I kept it to a short session, will go get some food/pop into town/go gym and come back with a fresh head on ready for an evening grind.

I lended up winning £208 playin NL50-NL200 and a bit of HUPLO100. Am now up to 18,449 points.
Not really any interesting HH as I didn't get into any pot over £100 and didn't have any tough spots this time.....

Average day is: wake up somewhere between 8am-11am, play for 2-3hours between 12-5pm, then I try and go to the gym/eat dinner and then evening is some balance between poker/mates/girlfriend. I think I average about 4hours/day of poker.

Sunday evenings are good for poker but I'm more of a cash game player so don't look to bog myself down with loads of MTT's but a couple mixed into my usual session is good if you have a sweat and keeps you grinding as MTT's last quite a while.

Don't really have any particular days off. If I go out on a Friday I'll play Saturday and vice versa

Just had a quick session ~30mins and made £91 putting me on £299 for the day. Going to go gym and then play try and play for 3hours later hopefully resulting in an interesting HH!!

Suprised how brief your sessions are, is this because you are busy? or you can only concentrate up to a certain point then you quit before you start losing?

Have just found that my concentration generally slips a bit after about 2 hours. If I'm feeling good or the games are really good I try and play longer

Hi Rolfus will be interesting to hear about your poker sessions, you sound quite a layed back person i dont know why! maybe its the way you write lol. Are you quite layed back when it comes to poker and do you think it helps your game or are you a 16 table mad man when you play cash? Anyways GL at the tables and with your diary 0:)

Yeah I would say I'm pretty laid back and some people would call me horizontal :)

I find being laid back is good for my poker game as it helps to stop me from tilting. I try to take my time when making a decision but if your playing 16 tables you have to be a bit mental/frantic. I'm pretty quick to go to the thinking ''It's not going my way right now, I'll take a break and come back to it''

I think you just have to play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses(emotionally/mentally). So if you have a high tempo don't try and overthink things at the table just go with your gut...but then your going to have to put in a lot of work away from the tables, reviewing HH's etc

    Thanks for the GL

Hi Interesting Diary, just wondering what's your way of withdrawing your profits since you play professionally. Do you just have a set bankroll eg £5000 and anything above that after the week/month you withdraw?

Also if you do use this method what do you do if you have a big downswings just drop down the levels or deposit and continue as normal

    Thanks Ryan

Me and Jakally played HU for a little while when the tables broke down. He eventually got the better of me when we got in TT vs KK but there was this HH which I thought was interesting....

I check/call the flop with what is probably the best hand and also has decent equity (an Ace, Gutshot to the wheel and backdoor flush draw)

On the turn I think I very likely have the worst hand so with the picked up flush draw I still have a gutshot draw and the fact that I could quite easily have a 3 as I had been calling a lot of his minraises....I check/raise

    He calls...woops
I think it's very unlikely that he has a 3 and I would have to be on a very random bluff for me to be bluffing and his Tx to be good so I carry on with my bluff....I overbet just to make sure ;)

Ended up £269 for the day, am on 19,054 points for the month and am up £8525 for the month....got 1 week to push for 5figures :)

Can you teach me how to play a hand against Jakally where he doesnt have KK or top set?

    PM me with the secret.
  • edited February 2012

    Nice hand sir.

When you raise the turn, you pretty much only have 55, and 3x as value hands, so I planned to call turn, call river
    .
Levelled myself on the river, when you overbet, and decide there are so few hands that you can take this line, and be bluffing the river, that I'm not ahead often enough to call - even though your value range is v.narrow.

Not seen you overbet many / any rivers before, which was obviously a factor in changing my mind.

another nice read, sounds like ur doing very well tom,

    i'll pose the same question to you as i did to tommyD;

bestest high, worstest low on the tables?
  • edited February 2012
Nice bluff skillz, defo repping da A3, did jakally have a bare 10? would have been a sik call. Id say he has a 10 or overpair to board although less likely still think he fods here with QQ

    wp

What sort of range did you put jakally on? i can understand if you dont want to give this away as obviously he reads this thread.

On a poker related question, what live events are you planning to play this year? any biggish ones or GUKPT/UKIPT and so on
