what is the best way to play pocket jacks ive never won with them so now unless its checked i just fold them Posted by bludreid11
Many, many, players struggle with pocket Jacks, you are not alone in that, but folding them to any action is a -ev play over the long-term.
The key is, if you get to take a flop, not to overplay them if the flop comes bad. For reasons which I can't really understand, most players struggle to let go of Jacks on a bad flop.
If playing relatively shallow - say, 12 or 15 x BB's, & facing a Raise in front of you, try jamming & taking it down without a flop. Most times, you'll get it through, but if & when you get looked up, it's likely to be against big Aces - A-K, A-Q, against which you are slight favourite, & you may even get looked up by A-J & A-T, in which case you are a big favourite. T-T, 9-9, & even 8-8 & 7-7 may even look you up, which is perfect.
J-J is the 4th best starting hand in poker pre-flop, & on 6-max Tables, you will be pretty unlucky to run into an overpair. However, once we take a flop with this hand, there is a goodly chance that any number of holdings will out-flop us - A-K, A-Q, K-Q, K-J, Q-J, A-J, A-T etc are all likely candidates. I don't know the stats, but I believe that almost half of the time, overcards to the Jacks will appear on the flop.
So, either try to take it down without seeing a flop, but if we do see a flop, & it comes bad, chuck them in the muck.
Throwing them away to any action in front of you will cost you winning opportunities over the long-term, so try & adjust your play here.
The probability of there being a card higher than a jack on the flop if you hold two jacks is: 1-(38/50*37/49*36/48), i.e. there is a 57% chance of there being at least one over-card. Posted by MereNovice

Thanks Vince, appreciate that.
A 57% chance of a card higher than a Jack on the flop is exactly in line with what I said - "nearly half the time". Ish........
Sorry for this being such a large post it's how the hands copy out of the history. Anyway I was on a table last night and I admit I got lucky on the hands after you can see them face up but after these 3 I was getting called a fish obviously there was lot's of hands in between these. Just wondered if I shouldn't have played them or if the way I did was wrong the first I find pretty standard?

I'm not going to comment upon the hands, because that's NOT the point you are making, I don't believe. In fact, I have not even studied the hands you have Posted, because it's not relevant.
The point is, & many, many, players write to me about this - is that you were mocked because of the way you played some of the hands.
Well I'd say this.
It is YOUR money, & you are free to play, or not play, any hand, any way you wish. It is nobody else's business if you make good or bad plays, or whether you or they win or lose, unless they pay your Entry Fees. And they do not.
For what it's worth, 90% of chatbox abuse comes from players who LOST the hand. Which says it all, really. A significant number of poker players are not very good losers, but you must not let them spoil your enjoyment of the game by their ill-manners or lack of backbone.
It's your money, CashBox, & don't EVER let anyone else tell you how you should spend it. It's none of their business.
I hope you continue to enjoy your Poker - because that is the only reason recreational players - & 99% of Sky Poker players ARE recreational - have to play the game.
