POKER IN MY LIFE

edited September 2012 in Poker Chat
Hi,

This was just going to be a question on the forum to start with about "Bet Sizing" but I thought why not take this opportunity to introduce myself to the players of Sky Poker.

As a quick potted history I am male, 54years old & have been playing online poker for the past 3 years. I first played poker as a 15/16 year old with friends and had some really enjoyable all night sessions playing if i remember right 5 card draw. Leaving school & growing up meant a parting of the ways with poker for the next 35 years, I mean lets face it in those days there was no such thing as home computers, let alone internet poker. Being brutally honest a night out with the lads - booze ,women & football/cricket had far more appeal than 6 lads sat around a dining room table.

Things changed about 3 years ago, i was watching an advert on TV for the latest internet poker,  3D poker with all its plus points. Playing poker on the internet had never really appealed, although poker appealed to my analytical/mathematical brain I would much rather play games on the PS2 or PS3 I appreciated the graphics as I could remember the early days of playing space invaders or pacman in the local pub.

So at this point my life changed & i made the first of many mistakes, as I didn't know where my poker journey was going to take me I just downloaded the software & started to play. In hindsight it would have been so much better had i been referred by a friend or joined via some affiliate website & qualified for rakeback but at this point i didn't know what "5 card no limit holdem" was let alone rake. So Woggie8688 was born.

Let me explain before i go any further where i got the name from, I don't want people getting upset, I am no way a racist and the sun & i dont get on well at all, i am whiter than a bottle of milk but in my youth i played in a cricket team that had 7 Mike's, Michaels or Mick's in it so if the ball went in the air & someone shouted Mike's ball what usually followed was either complete carnage or acute embarrassment. If as a goalkeeper I shouted mine no-one took a blind bit of notice, however if i shouted "Woggies" then they all got out of the way. So thanks to a friend of a teammates friend Woggie Roberts was born and 37 years on more people know me as Woggie rather than Mike, or in the case of my mother Michael " if i had wanted to call you Mike, I wouldn't have christened you Michael !! " That has been the case until recently, but that's another story. Woggie as an alias had already been taken so the 8688 isnt my date of birth 08/06/88 as a few people have assumed & I wish was the case or the P.I.N. of my credit card but purely a boring thing, being the street address at work 86 to 88 .

Having now typed more in one morning than i have done in a lifetime i will leave things there, and if people think its worth reading and want more, i am more than happy to wear away the ends of my fingers.

I'm confused is it Woggie or Woogie? Would Sky not let you register as Woggie hence the change? Interesting to read on your profile why you took up poker. Has it helped you keep sharp mentally? Maybe live poker is more of an opportunity to sharpen the mental faculties but I'm not sure about online where more of the work is done for you. But anyway maybe see you on the tables and good luck.

Hi Mike, welcome to sky poker.  Had the pleasure of playing on your table in the deestack.  I'm sure you will do well on Sky, look forward to seeing you at the tables.

    Hi Dags,
No i started off on sky as woggie, but after watching ch 865 i put a post on "ask Tikay" about iffy aliases that might not be mentioned on the show. Tikay was of the opinion that mine wouldn't be mentioned , so he kindly arranged for it to be changed hence woggie became woogie.
I haven't ever had the opportunity to play "live poker" although i would love to do so at some point if that's possible. Am not sure that playing poker keeps my mind mentally sharp but it sure does occupy my time as following my stroke a lot of the other things i used to do are obviously impossible.I look forward to building my bankroll up so i can take more of an active role among the sky community.

To me poker should be fun & you helped making the deepstack that, although getting to FT always helps !
I look forward to playing you in the future & if the players on Sky are like you, it will be a pleasurable experience.

    Hi dazzler
thanks for the welcome, on PKR I played 6 person sng rather than 10 seaters or mtt's which seemed to suit my game & concentration period.on sky with a much smaller starting roll I reckon to start on Dym's seems safest, I have also registered to the afternoon deepstack as £2.20 gives me plenty of play (was chuffed to make the FT yesterday) but god it seemed to last forever.
Hopefully if I can build the roll up then i can play more of the tourneys but i reckon I will stick to Sng's in the main.
If we meet on the tables I hope you dont make up the rules on here :-)

Welcome Woogie....enjoy yourself. Keep an eye on the forum. There's some good competitions set up by members which have a nice atmosphere and a lot of banter. I haven't been yet but the sky poker tour comps are very popular and great fun it seems. You've made a good choice mate....gl at the tables.

Thanks for the kind words guys i look forward to playing you on the tables at some point.
I was watching ch865 last night & Ryan said to read a poker book for 1/2 an hour before you go to bed!! Excuse me I would much rather go to bed with Anna Fowler even if he was there as well :-0
No seriously I have a lot to thank ch865 for & feel it has improved my skills & therefore my enjoyment of poker, even tho I was playing poker on another site. I can't understand for the life of me why Sky don't broadcast on freeview or cable channels i am sure it would increase the numbers of players on Sky poker.
A lot of you are i am sure familiar with the other site, whereby you can model & dress your avatar to provide you with a table image. For some reason i chose to make the face as realistic as is possible & dressed in a smart burgundy jacket i started to play the freemoney tables ( No hang on the words smart & burgundy jacket don't go in the same sentence, sorry Tikay). After 1 week of crushing these tables I think i went from $1,000 to $745,000 I took the plunge & deposited $100. Glad to say that i never had to reload & for 3 years i learned a lot, playing 10k + games.
But we all need a change of scenery, a new challenge & I dont want this bit to sound like an advert for sky poker, but playing in £'s , the forum, channel 865, cash for points & all British (oops nearly said English) site made me decide to join.
Going back to avatars I can never understand why blokes would want a female avatar (I mean be honest with a name like TommyD it does give the game away a little :-) ).
Anyway i am not or have not the oratory skills of TommyD to turn this post into a blog. (Wish i had 1/2 his poker skills as well). but the journey continues whether I crash & burn on the tables or  I get to tell some more, only time will tell.

Well for my 1st post I would like to say I met Mike (woggie8688 or woogie8688) on another site where I played a strong cash game but after a major down swing I decided I wanted to play sngs and here was a man who didn't know me but took me under his wing and with his guidance  I am becoming on of the top sng players on that site and yes still having a few down swings but more often then not when I am down with in a day or 2 I am suddenly back up.

Mike is one of the best sng players I know so be wary if you meet him on a table .. I have never managed to beat him when we have sat on a 6 max game but recently won our HU challenge lol

Thanks kieron thats a tenner i owe you. I forgot you played a bit on Sky as well, remember mate its only variance, poker is 80% skill & 20% luck, even though sometimes it feels like it is the other way around. And i told you my daughter is a better heads up player than me :-(

Take care my friend & keep running good.

    I know m8 pkt 3's serious bad move & bad timing :-(
The day got off to a real bad start, i fell asleep and missed the start of the afternoon league deepstack tourney by 3 mins dohhh. That with not playing the day before with having to go to the hospital, i need to post pretty good finishes today & tomorrow if i want to get anywhere.
Played Dym's instead then & wow life was good cashed 8/8.
Then i made a big mistake left a post for devonfish try & gee him up and said how it was going. Lost 4/4 in a row, so before i got too tilted i stopped playing & settled for watching the VLV priority members tourney. Great stuff to watch & great result. Would have loved to have seen Tommy D's face :-)
See how today goes & memo to self : Don't fall asleep at lunchtime!!!

    Hi Lorraine :-)
Thanks for that & am sure seeing your smiley face & orange writing will make me love it even more .xx
Hope you are running well & hopefully play soon.
Yesterday was quite a tough day, bombed out of the deep stack fairly early & playing 13 Dym's winning 9 @ £2.25 gave me + £4.55 for the day.
Good job i am not trying to earn a living at this lol.

F.A. cup final weekend & although I dont support either team, I watched for the 1st time in 20 years, meant i didnt play as much poker as would have liked but at least it was a profitable day.

I look at the likes of Dazzler & Devonfish the volume of games they put in. I am definatley going with the tortoise approach to increase my bankroll :-)
only played 4 x £2.225 Dym's yesterday but won them all, also managed to win £0.35 in a freeroll so pretty good.
Also played the deep stack afternoon tourney again, which although I normally only play sng's I have found it to be great fun (not the losing) & the banter in the chatbox has really helped me feel at home on Sky. thanks again to thedon90 for organising it & I really hope it becomes a regular event here.
    So starting roll         £10.00

    Opening balance      £30.30
    05/0512               + £ 5.15
                              ======
     Closing balance       £35.45

well with the story of the tourtoise and the hare, the tourtoise ended up winning :)

House to myself yesterday so I could settle down & enjoy a day's poker, all seems good till I lose 4 out of the 1st 5 games.
Playing dym's is like a game of snakes & ladders I just wish this tortoise was better at climbing ladders than riding on the back of snakes.
Gave myself a good talking too ( well there was no-one else here) & this seemed to do the trick, & cashed  in the next 10/10 as well as qualify for monday's survivor.
Happy then with the days play.

    Opening balance        £35.45
    06/05/12                +£ 9.25
                                ======
    Closing balance         £44.70

    Hi Dazler,

Thankyou my friend, I know that sort of thing is the exception rather than the rule.

I trust that you get a chance for more poker today & dont have to sample the "Ikea meatballs" again any time soon :-)

keep up the good work in your quest as well.

Yesterday was a very sad day for the Sky poker community, with the loss of Acebarry10. I didnt have the pleasure of making his acquaintance or playing him on the poker tables, however I had heard Tikay mention him with great affection & he was obviously a truly nice man & cornerstone of the community. Somehow playing poker seemed secondary on such a day.

I don't know whether Barry had a favourite tournament that could be renamed in his honour, or should the afternoon league get the go ahead then it could be known as the ABM , AceBarry Memorial League.

On a personal note it was one of those days where staying +ve was very tough.

Huge congratulations to yidette9 who took down the DTD event last night.
Well done Lorraine you thoroughly deserved it as one of the nicest people I have met during my short term here. :-) :-)

    Played 26 games cashed in 15 & lost 11

    Opening balance        £44.70
    07/05/12                  £ 1.50
                                 ======
    Closing balance         £ 46.20

Another up & down day playing the dym's (No thats wrong way round down & up )

Am now starting to build up notes on various players & even the one's its best to avoid. :-)
Has anyone got any thoughts as to when the most profitable (if that's the right word ) time is to be playing the dym's, specifically the £2.25 level ?

Looking forward tonight to playing the deepstack tourney organised by GregHogg in memory of acebarry10, hopefully it attracts a huge number of runners.

    Opening balance            £ 46.20
    08/05/12                   + £  4.75
                                    ========
    Closing balance             £ 50.95

  • edited May 2012
10 days ago I started with a bankroll of £10

Last couple of days I have been trying the DYM laddering challenge & kept coming unstuck at the £2.25 level, which hurt as i had built the bankroll up quite nicely playing the Dym's at that level. Have now just won the £5.50 level 6 which takes the bankroll to £71.05.

What on earth do I do now?? would love to take the next level on but that is now a huge chunk of the roll, or do i be conservative ( a coward ) & stick to playing the £2.25 as I had promised myself till i got over £100 + . Knowing that this is the last level at which failure would mean an overall loss, do I take the money and run??

    What would anybody else do?

Ok woggie has been woogie for 2 weeks playing on sky poker, & the biggest difference is everyone is British!!

This may sound like an obvious statement, but it makes Sky poker a much harder site to play on than an international site, playing a 6 max sng you could guarantee that 3 of the other players would be donks/fishes/clowns/muppits or even when i started fronks (french donks). In other words if the line on your fishing rod was strong enough, cashing was fairly easy.

To the French playing poker was secondary, they just loved their avatar to make as much noise as possible & rejoicing in the misfortune of other players. To everyone's dismay the French government decided that they could only play on French poker sites, therefore a lot of easy money was removed from the tables.

When it comes to the Greeks, you can see why the Greek economy is in desperate trouble if it is run by their poker players, to your average Greek any rag ace is a monster hand & they can hardly conceal the delight at any pocket pair, with great cheers & laughing out loud.

The Australians are like a nation divided , the men & the women. The Aussie male treats poker as an ego trip & once they are in a pot they never let go regardless of their holding. Aussie women on the other hand are a joy to play, quiet unassuming & always apologising for the actions of Aussie males & therefore refusing to bet unless they have the stone cold nuts.

The Dutch are very much a nation of gamblers and seem to take no notice of odds at all, or the possibility that other players in the hand may have something better & there seems to be a glitch in the Dutch software which turns any call/raise into "all in"

The Germans are very much as you would expect, the minimum of fuss & risk taking so if in a pot with a German & he bets, you fold.

The other main obvious difference between Sky & the 3D poker site is a lot of recreational players who basically enjoy pressing buttons, as a result there are a lot more tells available including that a players cards are face down to himself & others are able to see when a player has to remind himself of his own cards, as the avatar will also take a quick look.

Sky is also a much faster site, which therefore results in there being fewer comments in the chat box, basically nh or ty, whereas you would think with the other that you had dropped in on some International dating agency.

I am  really enjoying my time on sky poker, however, my fishing rod misses the action on the other site.
