i should have posted it yesterday but one of my problems was my head was too obsessed with a hand that i had in the orford league that i couldn't stop thinking about. i saw on the forum a post which got me thinking could ryan accept me as a friend and when he did i had a quick chat about MTTs. i see on poker sites everywhere it saying that MTTs are easier than cash and after having a chat with ryan yesterday i'm starting to think myself that they truthfully are harder because with MTTs the blinds get bigger and bigger also their is a lot more varience based in MTTs. the thing i like with cash is you can leave the table anytime and when multi tabling it can make me feel less concerned about the risk of loosing chips when i'm betting.
the truth is MTTs should be just played as a fun form of poker my main money is make from cash and yesterday i was in a few MTTs but the cash money was big enough to keep me in profit allowing my BR to reach £636.
the MTT hand i was refering too was this with it being the early stages of an MTT you can't win an MTT but you can loose one and i know for sure that at this stage their is going to be lot of loose players. my thinking is if i'm sitting UTG or UTG+1 is it worth playing the small pairs knowing that if i miss my set i'm hoping for them to fold now that i'm out of position and also the times i raise with AA-JJ and see flops like this i won't want to make the cbetting any differant to the size i would make with weak pairs.

now their might be a 3rd spade on the turn but i still haven't ruled out him having an As or thinking himself i've got the Ako with a spade and he has a pair and so i got much more money when i hit a Fh on the river.
sunday was divided into 2 main sessions, the first session i had was one where i played a sat in an attempt to get myself into the semi for a ukops main and a semi for the super roller. They both went well and allowed me to qualify but it did require a big gamble early on in the ukops one. the first was when i had AK the villian choose to jam after getting 3bet it turned out he had AQ. the second one was when i had 33 and the board was very low when i choose to check on the turn the villian did a shove on the river and i took the brave decision of calling thinking he was just attempting to steal the pot as it was heads up and i seen him do it once already. once i qualified for the semis i was aiming to win one and use the winning for the UKOPS main itself and i managed to achieve it through the UKOPs semi, i didn't do so well in the super roller semi but their was not much attention going into that one as i was doing very well in the UKOPS semi which was played like a SnG. so overall i managed to qualify for the UKOPs for a price of £16.60
the cash table session i had after the semis were like a yo-yo, to begin with i was doing ok and things were looking well then the tide turned and players were more tight passive type so i fealt as though it was time for a very aggressive approach at the time i was suffering more losses and villians were starting to get more aggressive, at the time it was costing me lots more small pots but the benifit about it was i now won some massives pots including 1 pot of £99
so overall my money is now £645 and tomorrow i might have a few hands for the clinic.
MTTs are much higher variance but I definitely wouldn't say they're harder. Its probably mentally harder to play purely MTTs because the variance can be brutal but imo they're way easier. The deeper stacked you are, the more decisions you have and the harder they get, in mtts a lot of things become more straight forward. You'll also see A LOT more random less experienced people in mtts than you will at cash.
As for the 2 hands above, I saw the JJ hand cos a mate of mine was playing on that table and I've gotta say the river check is bizarre and reallllly bad, how many hands are we scared of? I'd go bigger on the turn and bet big on river.
The KK I prob go bigger on turn and deffo bigger on river. People don't make light river calls on 4flushing paired boards so if he's calling £11, hes calling £16 too and if he folds to £16 he'd probably fold to pretty much any bet
with the JJ on the river it wasn't that i was scared of any hands, what i was attempting to do is see if the player on the button would attempt a bluff, in cash games i do notice folding happening more frequently that i see happening in MTTs so if i'm OOP in MTTs should i bas my bet size on the strength of hand and how wet the board is rather than thinking about range merging?
when you say bet bigger on the turn with KK, was this bet size a one which could have made it too easy for him to attempt a bluff with say Asx Ksx and knowing i would be folding to a Ch/R atleast a large bet would get more from him if he had just the Asx Ksx and when the river does give me the FH if he still choose to call his flush on the turn i might have got most his stack.

so many people say this, but I think its just complicated in a different way. there are so many different stack sizes, levels of experience and playing styles, ICM etc all to take into account. you could argue that cash is simpler becasue everyone has 100bb (normally) and they mostly play the same TAG style, there is no stack pressure from blinds and there is no ICM consideration...
the state of my cash tables yesterday night seems to show that real difficulty i have in MTTs is caused by me playing too many tables. what i had going at the time was 2 DTDs and the mini and 3 nl20 tables and what was happening is some of my betting seemed stupid in the cash tables and in MTTs i really pay enough attention to my table. what i aim to do from now on is when i'm playing in an MTT i will go through the hand histories as a way of curing my bordom rather than multi tabling because in MTTs their is a lot more randoms comapred to what i see in cash.
Hint. If multitabling four or more just reduce screen a tiny bit until it goes different shade of blue. That way your alway aware of which is a cash table and which is an MTT.
the days where i was on tables with 5 passive players are now just about at an end, their might be some occasions where i'm on that sort of table but the majority of the time i can expect to see some aggression. when i'm 3bet preflop their is some people who are doing it with A10s overall my tables tonight were losses of -37p -£4.14 -£51.12 -23p -£6.46 and - £3.29 total -£65.61 the winnings were £10.40 £11.42 £42.34 £3.81 and £20.17 total £88.14 so my day overall is a profit of £22.53
tonight was quite a poor night and i need to start taking a break rather than playing too much cash in one night. what i did on thursday was waited until 6pm before havin any games and when it got to that time in the evening i decided to only play the semi knowing that MTTs are far looser than cash poker so i don't want to mix up my play too much. when i went out them i then went into the mini and played a few master cash too but things didn't go well and i was out after about 45 min. I didn't do that well on the master cash either and my BR was getting very damaging and so at 11pm i choose to return to the standard nl10p/20p where things went fine and allowed me to return some damage. so overall my BR has suffered a heavy loss and is £320.
so what i'm going to do on friday is play some cash tables early then i will enter the orford league as i will know then what i've made or lost so far and not play too much cash once the orford league MTT comes.
i would like to ask if anyone could watch my table in the orford league MTT tomorrow and give me some advice on any mistakes i might be doing in MTTs just so i know ready for when the UKOPs main comes.

mtts are more complex than cash imho i'm surprised how many people don't understand that.
although sure there are times during an mtt when decision-making becomes simpler,

Good idea, although you might want to consider doing a bit of NL10 until you get back up to between £400-500. I'm sure you'll crush as the few times I've seen you at NL20 you've been doing ok - especially when putting me all in when you have the nuts:)
the session i had this afternoon is certainly going to be my last session on nl20 as i've lost £30 through cooldowns and didn't find it as easy getting the money back so tonight it will be 4-6 nl10p. things did start of well and had a few bluffs but it looks as though the tables were after an hour changing into a tight style which left me with a big hill to climb if i went all in behind. this hand was my own mistake and i should have just folded it when he reraised

If others were still willing to call frequent it would not have been too damaging but sometimes their were so weird calls being done
after having what was a massive chip stack in the very early stage of the mini and looking as though i was sure to progress past the bubble i just happen to get the passive trapper who had QQ in his hand and so i lost my whole chip stack when he Ch/shoved it on a flop that was 10 high. So you might be able to get a large chip stack in the early stage but that will count for nothing as my aim in MTT is the final table not the bubble so i will be taking them risks.
the bet size on the flop i could say was a bit over the top but i'm thinking myself if i did just bet 1K and he jams i'm still thinking to myself i would still call, but i will know for sure next time that he could have premium pairs and the limping does preflop is a sign of weakness and he did just check all streets with middle pair on an earlier hand so now i know enough about him.

still i did win my moneys worth spent on a £3 AI sat a £3.30 orford league and this £5.50 BH through £11 worth of head prizes and i will be going into sundays main event with confidience as it is a deep stack MTT and i was doing good whilst my stack was deep it this mini.
the UKOPs main event on sunday was an event which i played awfully my betting pattern in it seemed to be just random and i didn't concentrate on my game at all, so it was not long at all before i just went out and wished i just took the money from the sat. the story itself didn't end their because i then choose to do the stupidest of things and just give my chips away in the mini and to make it even worst i went into the side event for £55. the amazing thing about that is the miricle happened i just switched the sky poker streaming off and was left with nothing but that MTT and it was at that point which i got myself playing poker at it's best.
some of the hands i think were played terriblely in the main event were

so unlike most other MTTs i've play the UKOPs side event on sunday was much harder for me in the late stages than the beginning
the only poker i had tonight was the DTD and some HU games both of them went quite well. in my two heads up battles i won my opponents 2-1 in both. the DTD events were both excellent, DTD 1 i finished in 5th position and dominated it nearly all the way it was when the MTT got to the bubble that i damaged my stack by calling an all in with 55 and face KK. the DTD 2 was another great event and in that one i got to the final table too and finished 3rd. DTD 3 was not such a great MTT and i went out of that mid way. the only unfortunate thing about the DTD was that this was one of the rare occasion 5th and 3rd place wouldn't be good enough as their was one oter guy who finished 2nd in DTD 1 and might be 2nd in DTD 2 but it doesn't matter that much as the reward was entry into wednesdays rebuy which i would not have been able to play as i need early night for thursday. so my BR today is £390
i went very well in the UKOPs side event on sunday, monday i got through to a final table in 2 of the 3 DTD today i managed to qualify into the main through 1 semi and now in the main event i went on to finish in 19th place winning £49.73+£97.96 6HP. the task is to avoid the positive tilt causing me going into too many. tomorrow i will enter the orford league, semi and the mini if i can get through the semi.
things got off to a very good start when i had AA did a 3bet and was 4bet so i shoved and he help JJ missing set, who says AA doesn't win. the next premium pair didn't go as well a short stack went all in and 2 called, i decided to shove my KK as their was a pot with 50 BB already so i was happy enough with them than waste more to then loose, the flop was not so good and give the shorty his flush and so my only hope then was runner runner FH but failed. this was the hand that got me really going

just want to ask when the blinds are still small if my chip stack is this large am i better preserving chip stack or could i play more aggressive 3bets OTB against short stacks?
the money i got from MTTs has not been able to stay that long, the times in the past it was MTT but this time it was alot of cooldowns and a few bad calls. the cooldowns i had were when QQ lost to KK KK lost to AK flush lost to FH and KK lost to QQ set. the two hands i question my own play were AJ calling a shove on the board 8 8 8 2 the guy shoved with 108 so i was drawing dead, what made it so frustrating was he give me a great chance to fold yet i still opted to call.
the other loss i got was not quite as easy because the thing about this player is he was a total maniac and had been betting with total air, i was sure to still be ahead on the turn because although a second club and 7 came onto the board 9776 when the river card came 10c i don't know why i called that as their was lots of cards ahead now. so i should have folded the river for sure.
the poker clinic might be making players get tighter on the cash tables but tonight shows their will still be some calling stations if you study tables well enough. my original plan tonight was to play poker for a couple of hours then go to bed at midnight, thn i decided to remain up for 30 minutes more and then choose to stay on the tables. the thing about this calling station is he was reloading every time he lost his previous stack another benifit about him was he had 100BB at once. calling stations like this are good when they are around but the one i had on my table was too good for me to leave behind so i stayed until his game finished. when he finished on the the table it was just seconds later the tables were empty so he had the whole table targetting the same person.
to show just how much of my late night depended on that calling station here is a hand which i had against a different player, the calling station was at the time out of cash and sat out so i was wondering if he is going to leave as he had already left the other table. basically i thought well this hand i wouldn't have been in, this player said to me in chat that today was not his day and i had taken a full stack from him with AK beating QJ on Q J 10xx
my poker game today has given me more understanding of the reraise, when i was on micro stakes the pots i was in were nearly always going to be a case of me doing an open bet pre, a cbet OTF, double barrel turn, but what i was hardly seeing happen is a raise. now that i'm becoming a regular on nl20 things have turned into a more aggressive table pattern, their are still the tight passive ones who play fit or fold and fish for cards but the ratio of passive and aggressive is much smaller than micros were.
so my BR tonight stands at £393.65 with 78 point so far in may.
friday will see me making a return to nl10 as thursday night has been an awful run.
what i'm thinking is that i should have taken abreak after a the first two as the tables were beginning to go pasive and i do get extra aggressive when they are passive. 3betting preflop is more common but what i know hasn't changed much is semi bluff and 3bets post flop. they still have a very tight range. some of the losses i'm questioning are these.
what the check on the turn the right thing to do or should i have still done a bet and just stay weak?

should i have donked this turned set rather than Ch/R?
Hand 1: think you played that fine. Just no getting away. Betting or checking turn is fine, it's going to be hard to get 3 streets of value. He's often going to have PP and even some Qx hands.
Hand 2: I'm prob giving up on the flop, so draw heavy and opponent is prob never folding to one bet in 3 bet pot and he's so often all over this flop. As played I would bet fold here. AJ is prob only hand we are still ahead of.
Hand 3: I'm folding and for the exact reason you got into trouble. Your calling pre to hit a set. You miss so can fold, and more importantly one of your probable out is a club. Not just because they could have the FD but also it could shut down your opponent so you never get your implied odds.
The only thing I'd add... as a general rule you should never be set mining to 3bets when 100xBB deep. That's not to say you can't call 3bets with say 22-99 ever but it has to be because you know their 3b range well and have a plan to outplay them on certain flops. If you're calling 3bets purely to flop a set or fold, then you'll never win enough on the times you hit to outweigh the times you miss and fold when you're only 100xBB deep.

i see on poker sites everywhere it saying that MTTs are easier than cash and after having a chat with ryan yesterday i'm starting to think myself that they truthfully are harder because with MTTs the blinds get bigger and bigger also their is a lot more varience based in MTTs. the thing i like with cash is you can leave the table anytime and when multi tabling it can make me feel less concerned about the risk of loosing chips when i'm betting.
the truth is MTTs should be just played as a fun form of poker my main money is make from cash and yesterday i was in a few MTTs but the cash money was big enough to keep me in profit allowing my BR to reach £636.
with it being the early stages of an MTT you can't win an MTT but you can loose one and i know for sure that at this stage their is going to be lot of loose players.
my thinking is if i'm sitting UTG or UTG+1 is it worth playing the small pairs knowing that if i miss my set i'm hoping for them to fold now that i'm out of position and also the times i raise with AA-JJ and see flops like this i won't want to make the cbetting any differant to the size i would make with weak pairs.
once i qualified for the semis i was aiming to win one and use the winning for the UKOPS main itself and i managed to achieve it through the UKOPs semi, i didn't do so well in the super roller semi but their was not much attention going into that one as i was doing very well in the UKOPS semi which was played like a SnG.
so overall i managed to qualify for the UKOPs for a price of £16.60
the cash table session i had after the semis were like a yo-yo, to begin with i was doing ok and things were looking well then the tide turned and players were more tight passive type so i fealt as though it was time for a very aggressive approach at the time i was suffering more losses and villians were starting to get more aggressive, at the time it was costing me lots more small pots but the benifit about it was i now won some massives pots including 1 pot of £99
so overall my money is now £645 and tomorrow i might have a few hands for the clinic.
Thought i'd say a quick hello, been a while since i've posted in your diary:)
Well done on the Ukop seat binks, hopefully another deep run is coming!
Glgl
when you say bet bigger on the turn with KK, was this bet size a one which could have made it too easy for him to attempt a bluff with say Asx Ksx and knowing i would be folding to a Ch/R atleast a large bet would get more from him if he had just the Asx Ksx and when the river does give me the FH if he still choose to call his flush on the turn i might have got most his stack.
what i aim to do from now on is when i'm playing in an MTT i will go through the hand histories as a way of curing my bordom rather than multi tabling because in MTTs their is a lot more randoms comapred to what i see in cash.
overall my tables tonight were losses of -37p -£4.14 -£51.12 -23p -£6.46 and - £3.29 total -£65.61
the winnings were £10.40 £11.42 £42.34 £3.81 and £20.17 total £88.14
so my day overall is a profit of £22.53
what i did on thursday was waited until 6pm before havin any games and when it got to that time in the evening i decided to only play the semi knowing that MTTs are far looser than cash poker so i don't want to mix up my play too much. when i went out them i then went into the mini and played a few master cash too but things didn't go well and i was out after about 45 min. I didn't do that well on the master cash either and my BR was getting very damaging and so at 11pm i choose to return to the standard nl10p/20p where things went fine and allowed me to return some damage.
so overall my BR has suffered a heavy loss and is £320.
i would like to ask if anyone could watch my table in the orford league MTT tomorrow and give me some advice on any mistakes i might be doing in MTTs just so i know ready for when the UKOPs main comes.
gl and hope your br starts to climb back up!
things did start of well and had a few bluffs but it looks as though the tables were after an hour changing into a tight style which left me with a big hill to climb if i went all in behind.
this hand was my own mistake and i should have just folded it when he reraised
the bet size on the flop i could say was a bit over the top but i'm thinking myself if i did just bet 1K and he jams i'm still thinking to myself i would still call, but i will know for sure next time that he could have premium pairs and the limping does preflop is a sign of weakness and he did just check all streets with middle pair on an earlier hand so now i know enough about him.
Are you still ok 2 play it?
some of the hands i think were played terriblely in the main event were
in my two heads up battles i won my opponents 2-1 in both.
the DTD events were both excellent, DTD 1 i finished in 5th position and dominated it nearly all the way it was when the MTT got to the bubble that i damaged my stack by calling an all in with 55 and face KK.
the DTD 2 was another great event and in that one i got to the final table too and finished 3rd.
DTD 3 was not such a great MTT and i went out of that mid way.
the only unfortunate thing about the DTD was that this was one of the rare occasion 5th and 3rd place wouldn't be good enough as their was one oter guy who finished 2nd in DTD 1 and might be 2nd in DTD 2 but it doesn't matter that much as the reward was entry into wednesdays rebuy which i would not have been able to play as i need early night for thursday.
so my BR today is £390
things got off to a very good start when i had AA did a 3bet and was 4bet so i shoved and he help JJ missing set, who says AA doesn't win. the next premium pair didn't go as well a short stack went all in and 2 called, i decided to shove my KK as their was a pot with 50 BB already so i was happy enough with them than waste more to then loose, the flop was not so good and give the shorty his flush and so my only hope then was runner runner FH but failed.
this was the hand that got me really going
the cooldowns i had were when QQ lost to KK KK lost to AK flush lost to FH and KK lost to QQ set.
the two hands i question my own play were AJ calling a shove on the board 8 8 8 2 the guy shoved with 108 so i was drawing dead, what made it so frustrating was he give me a great chance to fold yet i still opted to call.
