    Gary

I've never posted on your diary before but just wanted to say hello and that I always enjoy this thread.

Think half of it is because I can relate my results to your own progress. I started properly playing Sky back on the 2nd of January with £2.20 in my account and started playing 30p turbo dym's then 50p's, then £1s etc etc I now 4 table £5 dyms with the odd MTT thrown in and I've managed to get my profit up to just under £800 without having to deposit (£1,050 if I include my golf betting profit lol). It's no where near as impressive as building your roll from absolutely nothing - still amazed you've done this from just points alone!!!!

Anyway, just thought I'd show my appreciation for one of the best diaries on here in my opinion

Thank-you very much. My first ever deposit to play online poker was £50 I put on Sky Poker in 2009, and that came out of money I'd made selling Zynga/Facebook playchips on eBay. I've been very lucky and never had to deposit since. I've now spread my bankroll across several well-known poker sites and withdrawn a few thousand quid too, all from playing micro-stakes tournaments. Can't be bad; enjoying yourself and making money at the same time. Best of luck to you.

First up today I tried a DYM. With blinds at 75/150 and 12BB I open shoved pocket 88 and got a surprisingly light call from K9o. However the result of the race wasn't unexpected considering the way I'm running at the moment; the caller won with a straight and I went out in fifth.

My second game was a £2.30 Bounty Hunter. There was initial hope with a double and head-prize in level 2 when my flopped nut straight (I held AJ, flop TQK) held up against a loose caller with flopped top pair (K9). I survived an hour but little else went my way. Soon after doubling an opponent with my two pairs no good against his flush I shoved pocket 88 from the BB over two limpers. I was called by A9s and predictably lost my second flip of the day too.

I'm just not feeling it at the moment and couldn't be bothered to enter anything else. I'm out all day tomorrow so won't be playing any poker. I'll be back to try my luck again on Saturday afternoon. Until some confidence returns I'm going to keep both volume and stakes very low.

Totally agree with MP, won't be long till things are going north again.

You have done brilliant, in this chalenge and your previous one.

Just keep doing what you've always done, just sounds like your having a bit of run bad.

    All the best

I'm not sure if I've ever posted on this thread... but I do follow it with great interest.  Its hugely impressive to have done what you have done so far and im certain you'll reach your target.

And I must say how incredible you BRM is.  How do you resist staying away from some of the higher games even at £5?

I'm a sucker for not sticking to a good BRM and Im sure I you could give teach me how to keep to one.

Stay motivated.  Swings come and go.

Tried a couple of £2.30 Bounty Hunters without any success. I haven't cashed in a tournament for 15 days now.

I'm still not feeling it at the moment. From the moment I log on I can't help having an overwhelming feeling that I'm going to lose no matter I do. I know it makes no sense, but unfortunately what happens at the table is only reinforcing my misconception. I'm still very good at losing all-ins; never winning from behind, frequently losing when ahead. As for aipf flips; forget it. I didnt win any again today, the last flip I won was on Monday.

I know VespaPX, MP33, LARSON7 and gazza127 are right (thanks for your encouragement guys), this is a temporary blip and I'll snap out of it sooner or later. But for now I have absolutely no motivation and I'm going to keep volume and buy-ins to the minimum. I'll be back tomorrow to try my luck in the two morning £3.30s. I've won them both multiple times, they seem to be as good a place as any to try and rediscover some form.

I feel for you Gary, I really do. We have all been there and undoughtedly will do again and again. They key to these runs is never chase the money you've 'lost' and to come out of these days losing the minimum which it looks like your doing. Then when things pick back up you can then get the extra feel good factor that you never lost your head and made back and more what you lost when running against variance.
  • edited September 2013
Get back on the horse and smash this variance,  gary.

You're a winning player and have inspired many low stakes /new players with this diary. I basically reread the first half of this diary when hit with my first downswing in my first month here, and took loads of inspiration from it.

I'm sure you'd be full of rational advise ffor a player feeling superstitious when they keep getting it in good and losing.

    Cheers,

As planned I entered the two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters. I lasted an hour in both, but to no avail. I only won two pots at showdown in all that time, none in the 9-45am, two in the 10-45am; my pocket AA being best against T9o for a double, then my KQ winning a pot against two pairs after I flopped the nuts (AJT), the Q on the turn blew any chances of winning a big pot there.

My exit hand in the 9-45 was ace-high < king-high aipf. In the 10-45 as pre-flop aggressor my KTs was busted by a SB flat caller with T3o on a ten-high flop. I had only one shot at a head-prize, it came in the 9-45am, though my QTs was unable to hold against a 4BB shortie's Q9o.

That was it for the day. I may or may not try a couple of small games tomorrow, it depends whether or not I have the time and whether or not I can be bothered.

Tried two £2.30 Bounty Hunters and a HU match this afternoon. In the first two games I carried on exactly where I left off yesterday; unable to win crucial pots no matter what.

Then I had an unexpected breakthrough; I won a £2.30 Bounty Hunter!

It was more like an STT to be honest, attracting only 9 runners and I only took one head-prize. But I don't care; winning it felt superb after a terrible run of form. I hadn't even looked at the lobby and was completely unaware I was playing the 'final table' until there were only three players left.

I was adrift in third of three with two to be paid at the time, but I was gifted victory by the runaway chipleader who was playing far too loose and aggressive. The first double came when he paid off my set of fives on the river with K3 on a 3J95K run-out. Then he chased my bounty with K9, all the chips going in on a JT9 flop, holding JT I swerved his outs for another double. I doubled again and took a substantial lead when my 78s turned a straight to crack his pocket QQ. Early in heads up play I saw a dream 345 flop when holding 67s. My opponent was unable to fold his pocket kings and victory was mine.

Strangely I didn't need to flip once in the Bounty Hunter, victory came courtesy of the four big holds mentioned above. I finish only £1.28 up on the day, however that feels huge to me at the moment, this is my first winning session in 17 days. I'm not going to get too excited, but this tiny bink has revived some much needed confidence and enthusiasm at a time when both had dropped close to zero.

Flopping heck. The final hand the Bounty Hunter. Against many villains I'd lean towards folding my suited connectors to a three-bet here, however this particular opponent was three-betting very wide and had already shown himself to be incapable of folding overpairs no matter how scary the board. Investing the extra 450 chips paid off handsomely.

I played in the 10-45am £3.30 Bounty Hunter today. I felt I was the strongest player at my table and I slowly accumulated a stack, however it was back to the run-bad and I was destined to bust a few spots from the bubble empty handed.

After 90 minutes of play I was three-outered on the river in the first 'all-in and called' hand I'd been involved in in the entire tournament. Just four hand later I busted with a flopped a set of two's which couldn't hold against a flush draw. With morale still low this short-sharp dose of bad runnage was more than enough to discourage any further play.

I entered the two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters today without any success. When short after 80 minutes of play in the 9-45am I busted the first time I was all-in and called; my shove with A7s no good against a caller on the BB with JT.

In the 10-45am holding pocket 99 I raised to 5BB over a limper, he decided to call with 54o. I made a set, he made a straight.

The cards still aren't falling my way. I entered the 10-45am £3.30 Bounty Hunter today and lost three of the four big pots in which I was involved. Things looked good for a while in level 3 when my flopped straight with 98s held-up against a player happy to play for his stack holding Q2o on a QJTr flop to win me a full double, unfortunately it quickly went downhill after that.

In the next hand I lost a standard flip when I 3-bet shoved AK over the same players UTG 5x open, losing the race when he called with pocket 55. I haven't won a flip on Sky Poker since Monday 23rd September so the result of the hand didn't really come as a surprise. A few hands later I got my stack all-in pre-flop holding pocket KK against pocket 77 and 9To. A hold was worth a head-prize and a double average stack. The flop and turn were safe, a 7 was dealt on the river. Left short I squeeze/shoved AT from the button over a limper, he was trapping with pocket AA and I was out.

Morale remains low and I just can't get motivated to play at the moment. I'm going to keep to a minimal volume at micro-stakes until some enthusiasm returns.

This is an epic thread, very inspiring stuff!

Makes me want to do my own similar challenge TBH. Tell me something, how does entering freerolls with poker points work? For example, I currently have 225 poker points - if I enter a freeroll for say 20 points, I will be down to 205 poker points. However after every month my poker points balance goes back to 0 and I get the rewards payout. Not sure how you deal with this in terms of your challenge?

However after every month my poker points balance goes back to 0 and I get the rewards payout. Not sure how you deal with this in terms of your challenge?

    Thank-you!

I'm not sure what happens now regarding the points, it's changed from 'Cash for Points' to 'Rewards' since I started this thread. One thing that I'm sure of is this; any poker points you hold at the start of the month will still be there at the end of the month if you haven't spent them on freerolls.

The freerolls have changed too. Back in January all the NLHE freerolls cost 25 points to enter with a £50 prizepool (rebuys and add-ons were available for 50p but I never took them), so essentially I had enough points for 40 attempts. Though there was also a £100 Omaha freeroll each Saturday and Sunday which cost only 10 points.

This challenge would be much easier if I started today because there is a £500 Free Cash freeroll at 7-00pm every evening as part of The Magnificent Seven. It's completely free, you can enter even if you have no points at all. If I was starting this challenge now I'd try to turn zero points into £1,000.

    Down £0.15
    today

More of the same for the most part, though there were some signs that things might be about to turn around.

Highlight of the day was winning a £3.15 HU match when my flopped straight held-up against top pair.

Lowlight of the day was busting from the £500 Free Cash freeroll with pocket AA against AJs on an ace-high flop (runner-runner flush).

The signs of hope came in a £2.30 Bounty Hunter during which I enjoyed a brief flurry of run-good (see below). Firstly I won my first flip for 12 days when my squeeze-shove over limpers with pocket 66 won a race against K7o. Then in the very next hand I won a 3-way all-in with AK. Unfortunately I eventually ended-up busting with a min-cash when I shoved my last 8BB with pocket 66 into pocket 99. Still, I won't complain, this was my deepest run in an MTT with more than 10 runners for over 3 weeks.

That's interesting! I think there are two types of points now ...

Currently; I have 238 Sky Poker Reward Points. At the end of the month (if I didn't earn any more) I would recieve £2.38 and the Sky Poker Reward Points would reset to 0.

However if I check the my account page it says I have 927 Poker Points - these don't go down unless you spend them on freerolls.

I think this is right anyway!

I would be interested to try a challenge going from 0 points and £0 to earn as much as I can (no specific target)  - but don't want to steal your idea Gary!

    Up £3.27
    today

I entered the two morning £3.30 Bounty Hunters today during which I saw both sides of the variance coin. That I don't mind, it's when it's all one-way traffic for days on end it gets you down.

In the 9-45am I made a pleasing run to the final table bubble, assisted on the way by a mid-stages suck-out when my 3-bet shove with 66 cracked an aggressive opener's pocket AA. Mind you the same guy had luckily chopped a huge pot with me a little earlier with his AJo against my AKs aipf. My exit was an unavoidable cooler when short; the button limped, as did chipleader on the SB who was holding K9. I was holding K3, after the flop went check-check stacks went in with the board showing Kx93 with a flush draw.

In the 10-45am I was knocked-out by a humdinger of a beat when I got aip 3-way for a massive level 1 pot worth a head-prize and the chiplead. I was holding JJ on a KJ4r flop against Kto and K5o. My equity when the chips went in was 92%, however the turn was the case K and the river was a T, a villain with 7% equity scooped the pot.

Incredibly the relatively insignificant profit of £3.27 today is my best result at the tables since September 13th.

Interesting read, and a great achievement.

But it seems a little strange whenever your AJo holds to win a hand is down to your aggressive play, but when the other guy goes all in AJo you lost to a lucky donk. You've  been lossing  quite a lot lately to hands that earlier in the thread you describe as good play. But now your lossing to these hands you describe them as bad play. An justify your loss saying the other guy will lose over the long run with such plays.

It's seems this is what is happening to you, not so much bad luck but you have been playing hands that overtime WILL cost you money. I know as I've been watching you at the tables occasionally.

It's just not the case that when you play a certain hand it's great aggressive play, or you played a poor hand because you had been studying the other players at the table, or everyone else is a limper that got lucky. You bluff to often and hope your tight/agressive "image" will get others off their hands. But it isn't working anymore and you don't know what to do.

Thank-you. I'm not quite sure what your point is, but I'm pretty sure my long term results over the last four years (£7K profit playing a low volume of micro-stakes games on Sky) are an indicator that my decision making process at the tables is pretty solid.

As for the AJ hand I mentioned earlier I have posted the HH below. As you can see the guy with AJ made a poor decision to call a shove and a 28BB reshove with AJo and was lucky not to double me up. It's unwise decisions like this which make these tournaments profitable. I was merely mentioned that hand to illustrate that while I got lucky to crack his AA with 66 it hadn't been all one-way traffic.

BTW, you won't ever see me describing an opponent as a 'lucky donk' either in this diary or at the tables.
