    hi Gary,
congratulations on the £50 win mate...well played.

getting towards the stage now where you can actually play some poker as well as the freerolls.
    good luck...run well.

Great to see you have ground out enough results from the freerolls to really kick on with this challenge... you seem like the sort of player who has the discipline and skill to do this now you have the bankroll, just a matter of how long it will take to achieve.

In some ways its probably a good thing you are in the challenge, otherwise the £50 would just be used for more poker - definite bonus to have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of your hard work and have a good night out (or whatever) instead!

    Up £8.18 today

Boom! There was a very welcome result for me today with a second place finish in the 10-00am freeroll for £8.18, the biggest win of this BR challenge to date. These freerolls are a crapshoot in the late stages and you have to run well to make final table. That’s exactly what I did including winning 2 big late-stages flips and binking when I shoved my QT on the button into JJ in the blinds on the final table bubble. Right at the end my luck totally dried up. With 3 left the eventual winner doubled off me with A7>AK aipf for nearly all the chips in play, I fought back to get heads-up only to take another cruel beat in the final hand with AQ<KQ aipf. Still, I can’t complain, I’d have snap-taken second place money before the tournament started.

In the Omaha freeroll I went nowhere fast, making an early exit without winning a single pot.

Punching through the £20 barrier marks a major step for me. It means I can now switch my focus from freerolls to micro-stakes STTs.

Nice one Gary, pleased to hear :)

I would suggest you keep your points and just play the w/end omaha f/rolls now (you have still got 9 weeks worth of points!).

Good luck on your micro stakes journey now.

    Down 59p today

Maxally’s suggestion above mirrors what I was already thinking. For the time being I’m ditching freerolls (apart from the weekend Omaha games which are great value for 10 points) and I'll focus on STTs. As a result my Poker Point balance should start to slowly rise again. I’ll save them up as something to fall back on should I suffer a downswing that takes me close to busto.

Today started terribly. I bought into a selection of micro-stakes games that looked soft enough, but found nothing was going my way and I lost my first four buy-ins. At around 4-00pm the site crashed for half an hour. When it came back on it seemed like my luck had been reset. I finally won my first game, only a 55p HU match but a start. After the HU win I binked in my next game too, a 35p 10-player Bounty STT.

A few minutes later I also got HU in a 60p Bounty STT. A win would be enough to put me into profit by a couple for quid for the day. I held an 80/20 chip lead with 6 heads under my belt, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t close it out. Four times I was all in and ahead, one of them post flop, but I just couldn’t find a hold no matter how hard I tried. Eventually it came down to a flip in which my QJ failed to improve against pocket 44. Still second place was enough to bring me back to almost break-even for the day, it could have been worse.

Great work to get up to £20 from nothing Gary. You just need a little bit of rungood to get you off to a good start and you'll be flying.

I set an aim to get to £1000 about 4 months ago and I started with like £200 so be pretty sick if you beat me to it lol, but once you get a roll going, I'm sure you'll start binking a few MTTs.

Plus you can start earning some poker points now so you got something to fall back on.

Another day for me battling it out in the micro-STTs. I’m finding plenty of weak opponents to play, exactly what I want. Unfortunately I’m not getting the results yet due to bad runnage. Not a problem, I have plenty of patience and I know these weak fields will prove to be a profitable hunting ground in the long run.

Thanks Paul. It's gonna be a long slog until I get to the MTTs based on the last couple of days. I'm unsure at the moment how much cash I want behind me before before I dabble in the £2.30 Bounty Hunters, at least 20 buy-ins (£46) seems prudent.

I'm earning points the same way as everybody else in the micros; ie 2 points for each £1.15 DYM, 1 point for each £1.05 HU match etc. My plan is not to rely on the points any more and try to win the remaining £976.09 (gulp) from real money games. Progress will be very slow for now, things should speed up when I can afford to move-up to bigger buy-ins and MTTs.

The points can stay there as something to fall back-on if I go on a terrible run and lose all the cash. I'll probably still enter the Weekend Omaha freerolls for now because they're such good value for 10 points.

I dont know if you have seen that I am doing a diary of £200 ---> £2000, should be interesting as we may soon be on a similar bankroll!

What games are you planning on playing? Just heads up? any chance I will see you on the cash tables?

Thanks a lot. Yes, I have seen your diary, best of luck to you.

It's very unlikely you'll see me at the cash tables as I'm a tournament specialist. Most of the money won in this thread will come from MTTs, though I won't be buying into any just yet as my cash balance is still too low. I'm playing a mix of STTs at the moment. HU games are my favourite choice because the rake represents best value. For example at the £1 level the rake in a DYM (15p) is three times as much as that in a HU STT (5p).

    You could look at it like this;

    A £1.15 DYM win returns £2.00 for a ROI of 73.9% (85p/115p x 100%)

    A £1.05 HU STT win returns £2.00 for an ROI of 90.5% (95p/105p x 100%)

There was an unusual occurrence at the start of my session today; at my first HU STT I was joined by a player using the alias KevQQQ. It was a hell of a lot of Qs for one table.

Anyhow, I beat Kev and went on to enjoy a run of six wins from six HU matches. It was all the more pleasing because the slow-structured games don’t run often enough in the late morning/early afternoon for me to table select. A couple of days ago I got bored of waiting for weak players to sit down first, so I now just open a table myself and play whoever shows up. At the moment I’m on a streak of 10 consecutive HU wins, and I’ve won 14 of the last 16.

I’ve had a great seven days. Over the last week my balance has grown from £11.07 to £29.61, that’s an increase of 167%. I’m very pleased with progress and enjoying the hot streak while it lasts.

hiya, it was nice to meet the celebrated garyqqq whilst both doing our domestic tolley push at the supermarket, i have been following your challenges on this forum and the two main lessons that take from your quest is the importance of br management which ishould be the mantra of all micro stake players like me, but probably as important, something that low stake players lack is the patience you need to wait for the right situations, and this is what i am working on at the moment,.  good luck as you progress

    Up £3.50 today

This afternoon I had another session in the £1.05 HU STTs. The current run of ten consecutive wins came to an end in the very first game when I was beaten fair and square by step7, one of the toughest opponents at this level and someone I’d rather avoid.

After that I was somewhat surprised to find myself playing bingo poker against three opponents who wanted to play all-in pre-flop with just about any two cards. These guys don't usually turn up in the games with a slow structure. I'm confident in my calling ranges but it didn’t go my way this time, aipf losses including AA<Q9o, AQs<Q7o and AJs<75o resulted in two defeats from the three games.

At that point I was 1-3 down in games and pretty much expecting a losing day. That would have been fine, nobody can book a win every single session and ‘two steps forward one step back’ type progress is fine with me. However I then enjoyed a run of 6 wins against opponents who'd come to play proper poker and I finished 7-3 ahead.

I’m very happy with my current form and balance. Getting £33 behind me before the 1,000 starting points have been used up has diminished my risk of ruin significantly. In fact I’d say that risk is close to zero already. The main question in my mind for the first month was ‘can I do it?’ This week that doubt has gradually faded and I'm now find myself thinking ‘how long will it take to do it?’
