how did you get on in sundays £150 deep stack tournament at DTD today? (even though you are still playing at this precise moment in time...)
    Posted by chopsuey
I sat pretty quietly most of the day, but gradually built a stack in the later levels. With 30 left, I was in good nick really.

Then a young lady arrived at my Table who I've played many times over the years, she plays the big cash game at The Broadway, & kills it. She has plenty of moves.

She immediately started bossing the Table, & as I had position (she was in s9, I was in S2), I sensed a nice spot for me here.

She got 2 or 3 moves through, then got forced to call a re-raise for the odds v  shortie, & she tabled filth, 7-8 or somesuch. I've well & truly got her number now, & I just need to find the right spot.

She pops it up yet again, & I've got my best hand in 8 hours - Queens. Happy Days.

    I re-raise, as expected.

Even better, she raises again, exactly as expected.

    Gotcha!

I shove, she snaps, & turns over two red aces. Not as expected.

I really love playing there, it's the schmizz.

I had a bit of luck, too. I sort of accidentally backed into buying a 35% stake in a young lady, Andriena Nutt" who played the £300 Event, & she got 5th for £5k+. Nice, I run good.

If you ever get a chance to watch this young lady play, do so. Pure theatre, pure drama, 100% wow. An absolute nightmare to play against, though, if I were on her Table, I'd just shove all-in every time she raised, to take the skill out of it. Nobody outplays that kid.

She might even play the SPT Grand Final. If so, it'll be Aggro-City, this girl is an animal.

hi Tikay just wondered chap if you ever get or ever got a £ block ??  bit like a writers block when your balance reaches a certain point and for some reason you cant get off it . I set myself a target of £150  when I got there I was ecstatic but it just stayed at that up and down a bit but always at that level I know it must be psychological really but wondered if you or the Pros ever  got it  I know in your case it would probably be more like £150K lol But just wondered Cheers Dave
    Posted by LBDavid
Not really David. These days I play a very long way inside my bankroll limitations, so it does not much matter.

But when I began in poker, yes, I set Targets, & it seemed to be Catch-22, & sort of self-defeating.

It was similar to "Tourney Game Plans", which Thewy, myself, & a guy named "Belly" used to agree before every Tourney - they just don't work, becaue the dynamics are so varible. It's no good deciding to nit up if you are getting big hands galore, but if you are card-dry on a hot table, it's best to nit up.

Just play your best, ride with the punches, & let the Bankroll take care of itself. Providing you are properly rolled for your game, the bankroll will look after itself.

Good Luck, & keep me informed please.

I am intending to go and play a live deepstack tourny at a certain Nottinghamshire poker club on sunday. Starting stack is 10k with 30 min blinds. From what I can see at the end of level 4 the blinds are still only 100/200. Don't do too bad in the deepys on here but would really appreciate any tips

    Hi Bladey.

You can wait for hours, if the cards are not coming, don't force it. Enjoy the Table banter, watch the plasma TV's, eye the valets, just chill. I sat inert for 3 hours last week, & then, bang, 1 double up had me up & running. That's all it needs, no point getting busy early, leave that to the wide-boys.

Take the "Swiss Tony" approach. Playing poker is like making love to a beautiful woman. Not a frequent occurrence, so take your time, & enjoy the ride.

In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : .....Pray I don't turn up! :) Good luck mate. The only advise I can give is don't 'dance' too much in the 1st 4-6 levels. Always keep an eye on the ave stack size and when you get deep (I know you have the game to do this) play a little more aggresive against the meduim sized stacks on your table and try not to clash with any big stacks there may be on your table. Always have a premuim hand if you raise up against a small stack with little or no fold equity. I will expecting some tweets off you when you reach that FT! Oh......and don't get d/c when holding AA :)

    Hi Aaron,

The way you have Posted your question makes it magically disappear when I try to quote it. (Try it yourself!).

However, you asked how to "rate" the word "sharpness", given that weight, height & volume can all be measured. I suspect there is a hidden meaning to the question, as it's whooshed me completely, & makes about as much sense as my mate OyNutter on a good day.

The straight answer, of course, is that "sharpness" is subjective, so, like Dylan's IQ, is incapable of being measured.

    Tosh!

I would have guessed that sharpness (in the sense of a cutting edge) would be measured in the thickness of the blade.

However, "cutting force" appears to be used as the standard.

See ISO 8442.5 for a full definition.

It was actually a genuine question, not trying to whoosh you in any way.  I can't even remember why I originally asked it but surely it's not subjective.  I'm not even sure Vince it entirely correct on this one as an equally thin blade made of 2 different materials will have different degrees of sharpness.

The reason my question disappeared was that it was a quote of a question I asked previously.

Interesting stuff Vince.  This link seemed to say there is no international standard way but then points to ISO 8442.5.

    Non-Tosh.

"sharpness" does not necessarily, ordinarily, or even majoritily, (like that one?) refer to knives, blades &, in technical terms, if I may make so bold, cutty-things.

It can equally refer to one's mind, mental state, trouser crease, Harp Lager, taste (as in lemons), brown electrical goods (especially TV's), TV pictures, camera focus, mathematical nous, geezers (as in wide-boys), angles.

MissGeek to serve, 1 game all.

In Response to Re: Ask Tikay? : Hey Uncle Teek, hope you are well sir! I started a thread in general poker forum to get as many of my mighty knights to qualify for the SPT DTD final as possible!!! Well, 2 of my mighty knights have thus far qualified for SPT DTD which still leaves 5 of us to go (6 if sir rossy joins in - I understand Knight Missing RichO will be making his way as part of a presenter challenge so we can't count him in). With this in mind I thought I'd chase up the my previous comments re adding 1 x £5.60 freezeout per day to the dtd schedule...if it doesn't fill them it won't go ahead but if it does fill all those who hate rebuys have a shot at getting to the final too!!! It's fine having rebuys but surely 1 freezeout per day can't be too hard to add into the mix. There are now 90 places filled for the final so I would really appreciate some feedback sooner rather than later.... So sorry to be a whinge-bucket about this I know there is only so much you can do but as we are still waiting for the results of the stewards enquiry please please put your persuasive metal hat on and try your best for the smaller bankroll... 1 freezeout per day, try it for a week and if it bombs then drop it....we only need a week to qualify plusyou'll have a better time if the Knights arrive en masse...honestly :o) Hugs, Irene x

    Hi Irene,

I'm afraid I cannot help on that one, though I wish I could, as I'm deffo getting some earache about it.

It was decided upstairs, & I've sent them several Threads & Posts from players who were moderately underwhelmed in their desire for Rebuy Super-Sats.

If I could assist further, I would, you know that, but I can't. Hopeless, me, see?

I was clear in my use of the definition "in the sense of a cutting edge".

Don't mess with the International Standards Organisation!

I'm sure that you will have dealt with the ISO during your career in the construction industry (or perhaps they weren't around during the Middle Ages).  :-)))

We used "BS" (= British Standard), which was administered by BSI - British Standards Institute.

We ruled the world, of course - our Empire WAS the world (whatever happened to it?) - so "British" equated to International then. Only towards the end did the down-market & naff ISO appear. I could not tell you the product for a single ISO # off the top off my head, but I could reel off a whole list of BS products. BS 497 was my fave, followed by BS 4483. Corkers, those two. It was all about being "fit for purpose".

    Groan, kill me now.

The UK Bar & Fabric Reinforcement Industry had to comply with something called "CARES", which was the UK Certificitation Authority.

It was all about traceability, really, & it was paperwork city. I actully became a CARES Inspector briefly, but the Committee "work" did my head in. That's yer 5750/9000. Always struck me as odd that the annotation for 5750 & 9000 EXcluded commas, viz 5,750 & 9,000. Explain that please, Mr ISO-Geek.

To Barry, yes. BS 4483 is Bar & Fabric Reinforcement, which is what goes inside concrete beams, columns, & slabs, to provide tensile strength. Bar comes in diamaters from 6mm up to 50mm, & Fabric comes in "grid & bar size", typically A142, A252, A393 (I loved A393, I wanted to marry A393), then it goes into the B grades, B1152 etc, which was big heavy stuff used mainly in CE work.

BS 497 is (was?) Cast-Iron Manhole Covers & Frames. If I ever appeared on MasterMind, Cast-Iron Manhole Covers & Frames to BS 497 would be my specialist subject. There's a right beaut called a "double-triangular" which is designed for heavy duty use - Highways etc.

I'll stop now, in case I get close to the point where peeps lose interest.

    Hi TD,

The short & simple answer is "no", I do not, & never have, taken any of those mumbo-jumbo "vitamin supplements". Or done drugs & such nonsense, & next month it will be 42 years since I touched alcohol.

That's the + side. The negatives are that I've smoked almost all my life (about to quit, though), & eaten junk food & carbs for England until February this year, when I went all silly because I was on a diet & started eating salad & fruit. The Diet is over, 5 stone disappeared, but I'm still scoffing salad & fruit like there's no tomorrow.

I've never "looked after myself" health-wise. I used to work 16 & 18 hours  day, 7 days a week, though I've slowed down a bit now. I still get in the office at about 6am or 7am, work till about 4pm, grab a nap, then play Online until Midnight or so.

I was working for just under 50 years, & never took a days sick leave, not one, ever. I have not had a GP since I was a teenager either. I've had no illnesses whatsoever since I was a child. Apart from a few broken bones - arms & legs - I've never been in Hossie, either. My eyes have gone downhill big time recently though. The oddity is that my Dad had 11 brothers & sisters, & not one lived to see 60.

I don't take any of this for granted - I was just born lucky I think. A difficult childhood - to put it mildly! - was the perfect way to prepare for life's bumps & bruises as it turned out, & has enabled me to overcome all sorts of adversity without batting an eyelid. If I had children I'd give them a VERY tough upbringing, which would prepare them so much better for life ahead. Parents who spoil kids should be reported to the NSPCC & locked up imo - spoiling kids is child cruelty in my eyes. (As with fat dogs & cats, their owners are just being selfish & cruel).

Bit of a freak, really. Part of it is drive, part of it is a massive insecurity, & the rest is down to a burning desire to do whatever I do well. Which is odd, given that I'm not at all competitive in games like poker. "want my BB?, take it, let's just have fun" kinda thing.

Some racehorses are like that - they need a lot of work, others need to be lightly trained.

A very odd thing really, where my energy comes from.

A girlfriend of mine - ex actually, I'm solo these days, age & all that - used to call me Duracell man. Probz best not to go into that.

I confess, I enjoyed the question, & enjoyed answering it. Thank you.

I'm very much out of fashion & out of step with the modern game, but for me, it's a cardinal sin to push too early in Tourneys. It's a balance thing. The lower your stack, & the later your position on the Table (relative to Button), the wider you can push. With a bigger stack, you have the luxury of waiting for a better spot, or situation.

I totally agree and find myself getting deeper in tournaments and catching up on the early leaders more often than not.

...is the closest to the truth. Except I've never seen "Brief Encounter".

I've maybe watched 10 films in the last 30 years.

    Pulp Fiction

    Lock Stock

    The "Lock-Stock" sequel - "Snatch" I think?

Once Upon a Time in America.

    Goodfellas.

    All the Godfather films.

    That's it, I think.

I have no interest at ALL in watching films. I'd rather spend an hour in the company of Richard Branson, Davina Macall & John Inverdale, than go watch a film at the Cinema, to be honest. Films can wait until I'm old, & retired. I think Films are ideal for very young, or very old, people.

    This is good, though.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Lakes#Lake_Michigan-Huron

20% of the world's fresh water is in those lakes!

There are some wonderful, & memory-evoking, photographs in this, too.
