Ha, even by my very poor volume standards, playing against someone once doesn't earn them a title, be it reg, fish or anywhere inbetween!

The damage was done long before the double float hand, think that was the 14th of 15 pots I lost that session above £15.

(The 15th was limp/3betting 72 and getting stacks in on 887. Yes, it got even worse! ;))

    Ouch!

Was that really the first time we've sat at same table?
Come to think of it, I didn't have any notes on you so you could be right.

Not sure what to do tonight. Off tomorrow, so fancy some live poker. Problems with this though are that the local casino has just lost the cardroom manager and the tourneys are dying. Not sure if they're even running the cheap one tonight. This means that although cash will still run, it will have more competent players who have turned up specifically for that. This, rather than the players who like to play the cheapest tournament of the week with the worst structure but are happy to then join the cash table and lose a couple of hundred. Dtd closed Alea Nottingham i went to the other week. Not keen at all. It was like going back in time to a cardroom where the regs ran it, rather than the staff. Swerving that. This means that unless i come up with some new super duper plan (unlikely) i'll be helping create more seats for Nottingham again. In a bit of a quandry regarding next SPT. I feel that with the higher buy in and capacity that direct buy in is quite likely. Determined to play and so will do this if i have to. While i feel like i have a reasonable chance of satting in, if i don't get in that way, it could end up costing me £300/400 for my seat. Makes me a little reluctant to play the £48 sats. Not sure if that makes much sense.

DTD night on the forum is OPEN though. See thread at top of page for all details if you have never played it before.

Sometimes it is just as important to have a night of FUN poker rather than serious all the time. DTD is just this, and with 3 MTT's for a fiver......anyone & everyone can join in.

Yeah......that direct buy in may wipe out your winnings from SPT Brum :)

Yes, I have played the Dtd before and enjoyed it.

Totally agree on the having fun at poker thing.
That is what I do though. I wouldn't be going out to play live to have anything but fun. Have a few drinks, have a laugh with the players and if I win a few quid, even better.

Just seen this thread and its a great read.  I see you won an spt so congratulations on that.  I will keep an eye on this diary as I like the added sports moments, seeing as its not even pre season this will be the place to come when im missing the football at 3 on a Saturday.

Really enjoyed you talking about the cup final preparations they used to do.  At the age of 20 I am constantly hearing from older people about how its not the same and the pre match would start at 8 in the morning and last all day.  Gutted it doesn't have the same buzz now and the money of the champions league has taken over....also the f.a. cup final is a 5 30 kick off now isn't it? some things are tradition and should NEVER be changed.  The reason it was changed it once again money which is a shame.  The song you mentioned btw is "ossies going to Wembley his knees have gone all trembly come on you spurs! come on you spurs!", unfortunately F.a. cup wise I havnt seen us get very far, 3 semis, 1 when I was young that we lost 2-1 (I wont mention the team we lost too) where GARY DOCHERTY ( the ginger pele) put us 1-0 up. Lost to already relegated Portsmouth 2-0 (which I was lucky enough to go too......) and more recently a lose to another team we don't like to mention, the score line was a joke so ill leave that out aswell.  I do have pictures to remind me of what I missed in my room, ricky villa dumming a few players and scoring against man city.  And my favourite a paul Gascoigne free kick against the Woolwich lot  :) (could talk for hours about the sad life his had after football but that a different matter)

anyway got carried away there, but will definatly be keeping an eye on this, GL!

In all seriousness, i didn't need notes to know that you're a good player.

I thought about that hand quite a lot.
I assume that you would give me credit for being a player who could fire 3 barrells with air.
You said before that i would still have snapped with most holdings.
Not totally sure about this, probably, is all i can say.
I quite liked the line you took. In my opinion the only problem with it was I sized the river bet so that even if i wasn't so strong i would probably have had to sigh call. Just don't think with stacks sizes you could make it big enough for me to be able to fold there.
I did consider that if you thought i was at it whether you could just call on river as you now had showdown. But i think you knew that i was ahead of that and so to win you had to make me fold.

    Interesting hand for sure

    Hi Robbie

Yeah, not just poker here, i ramble on about all sorts of random rubbish.

Gascoigne is the best English player i've even seen.
The last season at Spurs he was incredible.
Still had a great career but he could have been one the best ever in my opinion.

Your lot are doing pretty well right now though, just need to keep hold of Bale.
Only been to White Hart Lane once. We actually had a half decent team then. (not the 11 point clowns of a few seasons ago)
We lost 2-0, i remember Steve Sedgley was one of the scorers.
  • edited June 2013
Didn't get the chance to see him play...so gutted :( I read his biography and his just a legend, such a shame his gotten into the states he has of recent times.  His lucky to be alive really.

Yeah I think he will give it one more season and if we don't get in the champions league he will leave... I really hope he doesn't give us 200million and I still wouldn't sell him, there's very few players that can do exceptional things like him now.  So true how do you blow a 13 point lead, that team had no fight.  Its funny people still class modric as "world class", the man is a good player no more , 30 million was brilliant business.  Its van der vaart that we miss, I loved him just for scoring against arsenal every game.
Haha, steve sedgley... that's years ago.... abit of an old man arnt you :P

When the SPT at Nottingham comes around I won't be staying in Nottingham on the Friday night. Seems a little pointless as I'm only 30 mins away and Mrs J has confirmed she will act as chauffeur. This means I will be drinking again. However, not sure i'll get away with still being there at 4am like Birmingham.

Very proud of Penny. As I've mentioned before she has MS and she deals with it with little complaint, She holds down a very responsible job, she's a Sonographer, and although she's shattered at the end of every day, she rarely has any time off. Her walking has got worse over the last couple of years and so if we do go anywhere she will normally be in her wheelchair. Please say Hello to her if you see us. (I've told her everyone is really nice). Probably the one thing that upsets her the most is that people talk to me rather than her. She sometimes feels invisible in her chair. We went to buy her a dress the other day and at the checkout it was as if the dress for me. (Maybe I just look like a cross dresser)

    .....

Great to see England get to the ICC final.
Just wish it was an English team. I will never understand how, for example an Irishman who has played for Ireland can suddenly be able to play for England!

    .....

I have played awfully at poker this last week. Been very fortunate to get out of it when I've just been on the right side of two big hands. Won a bounty hunter this morning. Not saying I was a nit but heads up was my first bounty. Would have had one more but I won a hand which left the other guy with 67 chips. Pity as he had a decent bounty on him.  Final hand I made quad 6's, bit better than Q4!

    Balls!
Played for around 2.45 last night in the Q/F and sneaked a seat for the S/F.
As it finished late it was cancelled. A couple of phone calls to CC and I was put into tonights Semi.
Looked forward to it all day.
First out. Think i'm ok about how I played it.
1st level and a guy who had done 2/3rds of his stack with Ace 10 raises.
I'm in BB with AKss. I'm just going to put him in when the button reraises big, 900.
I had played with the button in the Q/F and seen him show up with some less than premium hands/
Thought AQ/AJ/A10/KQ and a lot of small pairs were all in his range here.

Sat, with 3 seats at the time(before end of late reg) decent chance to get a really comfortable stack.
I shipped, he snapped with 77 and held.

Hindsight is obviously great and this is all results orientated but should I just be folding? Decent structure, take the race on?

As i'm writing this i'm starting to think that if in my mind I have an edge over this player why get in a flip with him?

    Confused

Be interested to hear some good players views

Penny :)  I will definitely be saying hello to her at DTD!  I agree - nothing tilts me more than people talking to the driver of the contraption rather than the contraptee (who could probably drive perfectly).  Run good Jac (not like you need any more help from me). x

    Hi Jac.
Look forward to seeing you and your better half at Notts.

As far as your latest hand goes.......It's a tough spot, your essentially flipping for your tourney life with the AK being a slight underdog and I would happier shoving with it rather than calling with it. That being said you're less likely to be up against Kings or Aces and oppo has less combinations, but its still a flip.

1st level - I think I fold to the shove (I'm quite nitty early on though:)

Good Luck - See u at notts

because, given his range you will be dominating him a fair bit of the time! it's just unlucky that this time it's a flip & you lose. i've been trying to reduce the auto-shove myself with AKs (ie I try to at least think about it first), but it will often be a +ev play.

don't know whether you have any fold equity here - you have played your hand face up so I guess he could get away from it - but based on your comments I would be expecting the call.

it's a high-variance play but fortune favours the brave (just not always)

  • edited June 2013
I hate being put in that position so early in a tourney. Against that oppo who you seem to have a good read on I'd chance it. Against an unknown I'd fold.

Interesting that you use the Irish contingent as the example and not the Saffers.

The politics of all sports confuse me, not just cricket. Not 100% sure how it all works tbh, but it does seem really strange. Even in county cricket, where there's loopholes galore to get multiple 'overseas' players in the line ups. (normally has beens).

Azhar Mamhood played for Pakistan tonnes of times at all levels, whilst representing English counties as an overseas player.

Then he started playing county cricket as a colpack player......

Couple of years ago I heard he was qualified to represent England!

    ????!?!?!?!?????

The Eng -----> Ireland thing is also pretty farcical, but I guess if you want to play for England, and you're qualified to play for Ireland, you'd be mad not to take the opportunity to try and impress and get noticed.

How long do you hold out waiting for England before you conclude it's not going to happen, and play for Ireland?

    29/30/31? meh.

Amusing watching Luke Ronchi play for NZ this Summer having previously played for Australia. He was hopeless, didn't middle a ball all series. Sign of things to come for the Aussies v us I hope ;)

Can't wait for the final, hope the weather holds. Think the best 2 teams (in these conditions) have made it. Although I do feel very unlucky having backed the Windies, dnt get me started on the DL system! On their day (knockout cricket) they have a punches chance against anyone!

Looking forward to the Anderson v Dahwan new ball clash. Key to the whole game imo, Indias middle order hardly had a hit this comp.

Jimmy to come on top for me! (again)

    Bring it on! :D

re the hand, I think it's a clear shove over the 900 iso given the reads/range on your opponent.

Alot of people think with AK, 'you're flipping at best'. When really, you're 'flipping at worst' most of the time, having blockers to the 2 hands that dominate you.

There's loads more combos of AQ/AJ/AT/KQ's than there are pairs.

Stove agrees, gives you just under 60% against his perceived range.

There's also the dead money from the opener/blinds out there, and you never know what fold equity you might have. (if he folds once every 100 times, this helps. It might be more).

I play very few sattellites and my tournament game is poor at best, I give little value to my tournament life, especially in the early stages, and am always looking for small +ev spots to build stacks early and give me a platform to go on and dominate, so I might not be the best person to comment on a 'survival' game.

But I don't think the structures/edge allow for us to pass up 60% equity even this early.

I may be wrong, whenever I have a 'tough' sat decision I ask Greghogg, he's pretty good/experienced at them on sky. will refer him to this thread.

    Added the 'math' below.

equity win tie pots won pots tied
    Hand 0: 59.090% 54.07% 05.02% 91661313 8506473.00 { AsKs }
    Hand 1: 40.910% 35.89% 05.02% 60843837 8506473.00 { 77+, ATs+, KQs, ATo+, KQo }

    Thanks for replies gents.

    Dohhhh
I only used Ireland as the example due to Morgan actually playing for them.
Of the present set up, I don't believe any of the African contingent have actually played tests for South Africa. (May be wrong).
I could to a degree understand the situation in the 70's and 80's. When due to apartheid some wonderful players would not otherwise have ever had the opportunity to play test cricket.
As you say it is happening in all sports now.

It's just farcical that you have two brothers playing for different nations, the Boetangs!
It's long been an issue in Britain obviously. A Great Grandmother who visited Scotland as a toddler is now ample enough reason for players to claim nationality.
I do see the reasons for players doing it but just don't agree with the system that allows it.
Derby had Kris Commons. Never going to play for England and then a chance to play international football. Good luck to him.

I always wonder though how do these players really feel about their adopted countries?

I think the best ever has to be Tony Cascarino who was one of Ireland's most capped players.
In his autobiography, he admitted that he had no Irish blood in him whatsoever and got lucky that no one ever checked.

No poker this weekend, so far.
Unusually  just not felt like it. Never a good idea to sit down in these circumstances because the focus is lacking.
Off work tomorrow, so beer and live poker tonight is becoming a distinct possibility.

    Big shame with cricket today.
Even if they do finish now it will be a bit of a lottery.

Been to order a new car with Mrs J.
She feels an automatic is the best way to go for her and so with a heavy heart the guiletta is going.
She's gone for a qashqai. Seems very nice

Nigel Clough now feels we are in no desperate need of a new centre half!
    Really????
We actually played some half decent football last season. Only problem we had (apart from signing a striker who doesn't know how to control a ball, win a header, or score goals) was that pretty much every time the opposition attacked, they scored.
Mid table beckons again. Although no doubt we shall be told that we are progressing each season.

Golf was awful yesterday. Played a betterball and my partner played well. I was hideous. Annoying when you're on your own, but whein a team, definitely not much fun.

Agree about the cricket. I don't understand why they didn't schedule the final for yesterday, with a reserve day today. ICC are wallies.

Would love to know who this striker is! ???? (lol) My football knowledge isn't what it was, I used to follow Donny home and away throughout our glory years (conferecnce to Division 2 ((league 1)) ), but then we started losing.

    So I stopped bothering. ;)

    Connor Salmon?

Sorry if it's been discussed before, I've only just recently started reading this diary properly, but what are your thoughts on Mini Clough?

Derby appear to be showing a lot of faith in him. Huge club, you reccon his Dads rep is buying him more time? I really want him to come good!

You don't sound very optimistic though! :(

I could rant for hours about Clough!
Really wanted him to do well and gave him a chance, but now I just want him to go.
He gets a lot of credit for doing well on a low budget. Depends on your opinion of doing well. Obviously as a fan I'm going to say this, but Derby are a big club in this division. History, stadium, fan base etc
The problem for myself and a lot of fans is whilst we Do have a reasonable squad, if we had kept good players we would be in with a real chance next season. We signed Jason Shackle and he was tremendous. A leader, a great defender. We sold him after one year for pretty much what we paid for him. We let contracts run out and then lose players like Kris Commons for £300.000.
The argument that he hasn't spent any money simply isn't true.
We tried to sign Conor Sammon before Wigan got him for £600,000. He scored one goal in his time at Wigan and we paid them double what they paid for him. £1.2 million!!!
    I could go on...

I went to watch Derby at Doncaster a couple of seasons ago. We really thought at the time we were on our way.
Jonny Metgod was more involved with the coaching then and we were playing great football. We had a fabulous forward line and were scoring for fun.
We had a Spaniard on loan, Alberto Bueno, whom was a fantastic footballer. He wanted to stay but we decided against keeping him. Last time I saw him he was playing against Real Madrid in La Liga.

I didn't ever get to Belle Vue. Pity. My Dad went for a cup game once and enjoyed it.
I mentioned a while ago, I do like to go to the older grounds. Not bothered about the new ones so much.
Baseball Ground had a wonderful atmosphere.
This year I'll probably get to 3 or 4 away games.
Looking at Ipswich, Yeovil, Blackburn and St Andrews. Not been to any of those

Just thought of one plus point with Clough though.
He is the only Manager who actually hates Dirty Leeds more than the fans.
And, 9 wins on the trot against them is amazing.

On second thoughts. He can stay!

Missed live pokers tourney to watch that shambles.
However David Lloyd is a god.
I think "start the tuck tuck" could be even better than "commence la voiture" (doubt that's the correct French, I only got a C)

    Still not all bad.

Yep, got in same way as you in the end.
    Luckboxed the £12 direct.
Only 14 runners. Great value with the overlay and surprised people aren't really going in for them more.
