In Response to Re: OFFICIAL TOTAL PLAYER THREAD : Since I'm new to the site, I really had no preconceived notions going into the competition. I've just been watching people play poker and taking notes. I can honestly say I went with the three players who I think put the most time into their game. Each of them are clearly devoted to becoming The Total Player and this is why I selected them. As for what they play, I could really care less. I know some players who play $25-$50 NL and are absolutely awful. As for age restrictions, I actually asked about this and was told it made no difference. I was free to select anyone that played on Sky Poker. To be honest, I purposely didn't even know anyone's age until after I made my selections. One piece of advice - if you are asked to send in hands....don't send in no-brainer hands. Don't send in a hand where the decisions were relatively easy. Pick a tough hand - one where you might have even made a mistake, but tell us what you were thinking. If I know what a player was thinking, that might sway me in his direction. I don't have to agree with him or her - it's just important to know that the prospects are "thinking" about the game. The best way to improve your game is talk about it and think about it. I make mistakes all the time and I'm always talking to my friends about a particular play I made or didn't make. I love my choices, but that doesn't mean I'll stick with them. If I don't think one of them can win, I'll make a switch. I  pride myself on telling it like it is. Good luck to everyone - see ya at the Tables!

In Response to Re: OFFICIAL TOTAL PLAYER THREAD : the games they are playing are not free . the competition is geared towards the highest profitable players, hence encouraging small stake players to play more games and play higher stakes , and trying to impress the mentors. they are wasting their money because the higher up players get picked .

I can understand how some of you must feel this is geared toward the "bigger" players, but I can assure that isn't true. I made a list of players that caught my eye and Sky Poker gave me a list of players from every type of game. I got some SNG players, some low-stakes cash game players, some MTT players and one High stakes player. From that list and my list, I had total autonomy.

Some of the players just put more time and thought into their games. Some of the players just wanted it more...or better yet, were willing to work harder for it. Btw, Jakally and Nutter sent in page after page of poker explanations. This impressed me. I had another guy (who will remain nameless) who wrote in "I've got thousands upon thousands of hands, I can't go through them all - this is the best I could do. Hope David understands."

Don't get me wrong, that is fine - not everybody wants to do what it takes to become the Total Player. Most of us are very happy to play recreationally and that is great. But....if you want to be the Total Player, you need to go that extra mile.

I recently had the pleasure to interview Elky and I asked him simply, "what makes you so good?" - His answer was the same as a lot of the great players in the world. He said....I work really, really hard on my game.

Remember we're looking for someone who can sit across from Elky and Ivey and Negreanu and hold their own....not just idolize them.

    Hello David,
    Firstly, welcome to the site.
I thought it was refreshing to see that you didn't always agree with the play of the 10 players put forward for your inspection and consideration.

You are not well known to the site and i believe you are in a better position to assess your charges without ANY preconceived ideas of the players abilities(no disrespect to Ed and Matt).
If your looking for a solid player who cant play that many hours and WOULD benefit from your advice, then im your man lololol.
I look forward to seeing your groups performance, and remember, in soccer, its the manager who takes the bullet for bad performances hehehe.

WOW! I'm still very excited from getting selected last night.  The response and well wishes have been phenomenal to me - both on forum and at the tables.........thank you all!!!! To address a point made earlier in this thread, I would NOT consider myself a 'high stakes' player and the highest I have played in any discipline of cash, sng or mtt is £100.  The standard last night (within the second half of the show especially) was extremely high and I am overwhelmed that David sees something in me that he can work with and improve. I look forward to the challenges which lie ahead :)

Im totally with you on this Phil, the three players selected last night all best showed their poker brains.I also do certainly not consider myself a high stakes player. If anyone looks at my stats the majority of games played are STT and MTTs with an entry fee of £10 or less. I need to carefully build my bankroll a lot further before I would consider sitting in on a cash table with £500. Im hoping that my experience in these MTTs will stand me in good stead against some of the higher stakes players and I too look forward to it.

    Hi Dohhhhh,
I think you'll find it was Tikay and Rich Orford on the original show, so be ready for some backlash for that statement as the community doesn't like people questioning Tony's honesty.

Well hes technically correct, it will be a vote which takes place on the forum!

He isnt lying, n maybe TK is such a genuine fella that he doesnt realise what is blatantly obvious and staring everyone in the face,

Not every1 is as straight down the line as TK is, in fact, hardly anyone is!

    Rover, I'm flattered :-)

But I thought we'd cleared up the age issue?  Clause 20?

    "
Sky Poker retains the right to substitute the prize with another prize of similar value in the event the original prize offered is not available due to circumstances beyond its reasonable control."

It's certainly beyond Sky Poker's reasonable control if the Nevada Gaming Commission isn't prepared to lower the state's legal gaming age to allow the winner of Total Player to enter the World Series of Poker main event!

    Hi James,

I think your walking a bit of a tightrope with that statment. If the NGC had an 18yo rule, then changed it to 21 yo, that is out of skys control, but those are the existing rules before this competition started. That was not the case for the last 2 WSOP qualifiers on this site. If the site makes a big song and dance about the BIG prize, being a comp were you KNOW you have to be 21 or over to play in(by law), then imo, it should be restricted.

    regards

lol - I thought the sarcasm was reasonably explicit :-)

By the way, Total Player is NOT a World Series of Poker qualifier, Col.  The trip to Vegas is only PART of the prize package.

    but james my friend ,

before total player competition was set up.

the nevada gaming commission have this rule in place a very very long time.

was it just a clear case that it was overlooked this year.

a simple error that your gov needs to sort,

does not seem fair on 18, 19 and 20 year old players on skypoker.

Whats your problem rover, sky will sort it, they will only select players over 21 for the final vote off. If they dissagree with this, what odds will they give me and i will have a bet on sky bet against it lol.

    Hi James,
No it wasnt lost on me, but we all have to be careful as ive seen other threads get out of control by trying to be sarcastic with comments. I was not saying that Total Player is a WSOP qualifier and i have added to the earlier post. Yes, the trip to Vegas is only PART of the prize, but it is also the PINICALE of the prize.

Please dont think im against this but i will discuss/argue some points. This point wont affect me at all as im over 21, by a fair bit, but if i was uder 21 i would like clarification as to what would be available to me then, instead of the WSOP.

    And therein lies the problem.
If that is the case then all the promotion that everyone can have a shot at this would then be wrong, and could lead to Sky being in hot water legally.

PS can i make a point. I am playing devils advocate in these posts.

First of all I would like to congratulate the 3 guys who got picked this week.  Phil , Ben and Jakally.  3 solid players who are always very consistent.

Phil maybe Dave can teach you how to play q 10 hearts!!

Secondly, I can not beleive the amount of time people are willing to waste worrying about the t&c's and qouting them and whinging about every little technical point.  Surely this time would be better spent trying to improve their own game and maybe putting them in with a chance of being picked.  I don't normally make comment on these type of threads, but feel that are far too many moans and groans and not enough positive contributions to what is a great concept.  As has been said before,  nobody is required to be a part of it.

Good luck again all that have been picked!

    Hi Bigshann,
If this was not aimed at me then i apologise for this post.
I will not have a chance to be picked as i have taken the decision to play my normal amount of play, which doesnt fullfill the criteria, and not increase that just to chase the prize. That said, i have organised competitions in the past and have ALWAYS had some people question some part of the rules. As i have said in another post i will play devils advocate but even if i wasnt, i am entitled to my opinion and have the right to put any concerns forward.

I just think its strange how people seem to think that sky are doing this promotion as a nice giveaway to its players?---Its a buisness idea to promote more play and higher stakes play on the site---full stop---one player will benefit from this promotion, hundreds will not, loads of people will spend money that they would not normally spend---that is why this promotion exists

I have no interest in moaning about low stakes versus high stakes players, I cannot qualify because I am not resident in the uk---I just think players should see this promotion for what it is--- An effort to make more money for sky, and not a fantastic gesture to thank players for their loyalty or patronage. Thats what the 100 quid freerolls are for --lol

........and the low stakes players and everyone else who is missing out on the FREE PROMOTION.

Last night they showed 10 selected players and it was only from the last 4 players that any hand where the 'virtual nuts' was not flopped was shown.

I had to select 5 hands and give reasons for why I have chosen them and then send them in.  I spent an awful long time selecting these as I believe that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I really want the chance. If I'm not tending to my family or my job, I spend an awful long time on poker - reading, watching and trying to improve.  Nothing has ever been given to me and I've had to work hard to get better at poker.

I am now a competent player who is still improving and now has the chance to move up to the next level (and hopefully beyond) with the guidance of David. I'm now finding it very annoying that the success of myself and others - fruition after months and years of hard work - is being soured by 1 player who has decided to spend an entire day bemoaning the whole promotion, site, players chosen and mentors for choosing them.

I thank everyone for their extremely kind comments, Sky for this wonderful opportunity and hope to show myself well over the coming months and good luck to all those who have the opportunity over the upcoming weeks.

    Hi Everyone,

I have been advised that one player under the age of 21 contacted us early this morning to enquire about what would happen if they won the 1st prize, given that they would not be able to participate in Las Vegas. As you  have all been debating today this is a grey-ish area in the terms and conditions which needs clarifying, however, we are not going to rush into a decision on how this will/would be handled this afternoon.

The player who raised the query is being contacted directly and we will make both them and everyone else aware of our position in the next 48 hours.

I can assure you now that our single aim in making a decision is to be as fair and just as possible to all affected parties.

So thank you all for raising your concerns on behalf of the Under 21's, this matter is being dealt with.

    Regards

    Adam
