Well I guess I've had worse drunk cash sessions (sorry Dtm, I'll never learn)
In the first half hour of playing I lost 5 hands of £50+
1 was set over set and 1 was AK v AA so they're ok. 3 I played rather badly
Sobered up a little after that and won some nice pots. Got very lucky in a hand v Dustolucko where I, let's say, speculated on the turn and hit on the river. He had a set.
Coolered a guy and then raise called a 3bet with A8dd and flopped the 8 and check called and then on A turn we got it in and his AK didn't there
So decent recovery. Lost £9 and made £11.30 in rakeback.

Jac Off (and on again).
p.s. good luck with the house move.
p.p.s. Good to see your new thread up and running. Will probably delay my working day by five minutes each morning which is always welcome.
Another 'interesting' fact about Filey which Paul forgot to mention. The Alabama takeaway provides flat packed build your own kebabs. Meat wrapped in foil, salad in a bag, 2 sauces in tubs and an unopened pitta bread. Never seen the like. Posted by HENDRIK62

Thanks for kind words Paul
Thanks also for suggestion. Think I might stick with Toms idea though
What got you into playing poker? Posted by Darkangel7
I'd always had a weakness for gambling. From around 18 years old I'd done plenty on roulette and blackjack. Oddly enough I've never been interested in horses or football bets. I'm still yet to actually put a bet on in a bookies. I may be one of the few who has a 100% win record in horses. My Dad put on 30p each way for me when I was 7 on Corbiere to win the National. That paid for plenty of cola bottles and Mr Freezes.
I bought a house in my early 20s and for once sensible Paul took the lead. I totally stopped going to the casino.
I watched late night poker and then got talking to a really good friend at work about it. To my surprise he told me that he had been playing for over 20 years. He went over to Gala Notts 6 nights a week.
I desperately wanted to go. I'd never played before and didn't really understand the rules. To prepare for my first live outing I downloaded PartyPoker so I could have a go at the play money games. It would be a few years later that I first played for real money online.
They used to have a play money mtt at 7.30 each night. Maximum runners was 2000 and it filled up within 3 minutes. I used to be really disappointed if I was too late in regging. With a couple of 4th place finishes recorded, I was ready to go.
With a mixture of excitement and trepidation I went over to Gala with Dave. The poker room was away from the peasants in the main room and down a little corridor. You opened the door at the end and were met with a huge fog of smoke. In that room were some very interesting characters. It was a seriously grotty place.
I loved itp
Some may think that this wasn't the best way to ease myself in. My first real money game of poker was £20 pot limit holdem rebuy.
It was self deal and sat in the dealers chair was Ali "Bag of bollockkks" Ahmed. I recall that Rob Creed was on the table as was Geoff Hill.
It'd be great to finish this waffle by saying that I crushed and won the comp. Truth is that I got through 3 rebuys pretty quickly and decided that that was enough for the night. We had t even made the end of the rebuy period.
No matter. I was hooked.
Over the next few weeks and months I went more and more regularly and after I while I began to cash.
The feeling when I won my first mtt there was incredible.
I'd had a good week. On the Thursday night I took 2nd place money of £1790 in the £50 rebuy in a deal. On the Sunday afternoon they had a £30 freezeout. The win was for £600 but it felt a million times better than the £1790 night. I'd actually won a tournament!

In Response to Re: Return of the Jac : You must have an impressive Hendon mob page. Posted by hhyftrftdr
Fortunately I'm not as fragile as the chubby maestro.
My first cash that would have appeared on Hendon mob was given to some Paul Jackson bloke from Birmingham. I contacted them and they corrected it. I cashed again in something a while later and when I looked again then my page had disappeared and it had been given to another Paul Jackson from somewhere in the North West.
I couldn't be bothered to contact them again. It would hardly be spectacular anyway. Maybe 10/15 live cashes on there that they would pick up.

Some memory jerkers there, Paul.
Ali, as I'm sure you know, is still around, & has not changed one bit. We used to play Pot Limit Hold 'Em most nights, & Ali used to shout out loud, with the emphasis on the last word,
"I bet the POT".
Truth is, I doubt he knew what the pot (size) was. Few did actually, & it used to get comical when everyone chipped in with what they thought "pot" was. God knows how today's generation of poker players would ever know how to keep track of pot size. We used to have little dodges to know what a pre-flop pot size bet was - in an unopened pot, it was 7 Small Blinds or 3.5 Bigs.
I used to keep detailed records of my results, & I did MUCH better in Pot Limit than No-Limit, in fact most of my bigger wins in those days were in Pot Limit. I really miss the game, so much more subtlety than NL. IMO, of course.
Rob Creed was a bookie, used to stand at all the gaffs, quite a character. He had a daughter, Fran, who married a half decent poker player, forget his name. Phillips, maybe?
Geoff Hill was the father of Greg Hill - did you know Greg? Very fine golfer indeed, played off scratch at Hollingwell of all places. Tough track that. Played with him at Woodhall Spa one day, when we were off to Skeggy for a golfing weekend at North Shore, & Greg shot par round Woodhall after bogeying both the last 2. Fabulous player, decent at poker, too. Then he got married, & that was that.
I encouraged him to play his first big event, the Midland Masters at Walsall in February 2005, & he picked up £36,000 for 2nd. Dave Colclough, who I had just started blonde with at the time, won it. It was the first ever blonde Live Interactive Update, in fact the first interactive Live Update in the UK ever.
Geoff was a tidy poker player, too, cashed in the WSOP Seniors back in the day, 10 years or so ago.
I didn't dare speak to Greg Hill at that time,. He'd been on the tv! Pretty sure it was a William Hill Grand Prix, where he'd had an exciting hand v Ram Vaswani. I've chatted with him a number of times at Dtd now, where he occasionally plays, and he's a very nice bloke
Through a mixture of ignorance and shyness, I deliberately didn't get to know many of the people who played. I bundled most them in together as 'wrong uns'. I'll give you a bit of a list of players I remember. Might jog further memories. As you'll see immediately from the first couple of names, Tikay, I couldn't have been more wrong about some of them.
Red Dog Tom - his accent made him seem a bit rough. Intimidated me
Karabiner, Ralph? - Big eyebrows
Greek Jimmy - thought he was awesome at the time.
Ash Abdullah - thought he was awesome at the time. May well have had some assistance. Played against him last year. Certainly not awesome now and with no assistance.
Lee "Borstal Face" Rawson - liked Lee a lot. Won the Goliath a few years back
Wadey - went bonkers when I folded KJ on KK5 v him. Sounds terrible from me but poker was different then and I knew I was beat
Kim - Always sat with chunks at cash. Liked him
Peter Costa - Only there from time to time. Won everything. Not so keen on him as his brother
Maria - Used to talk to her a lot. Of course I did. Very pretty and a good player. Played on Late Night Poker
Mick "The Crook" - was always ok with me
Nick O'Brien - Always dealt. Was a similar age to me. Thought he was going to be a star. Saw him for first time in maybe 10 years earlier this year
Will Fry - Quite liked him. Won an EPT. Got a bit of grief for his winners photo
Taffy - Legend. Was amazed to see him at UKPC. Sky great, TommyD wrote a bit about him in the way that only he can, after sharing a table with him.
Oscar - Dealt a bit. Really liked him. Just seemed to disappear
Fabulous stuff, Paul. I could spend all day commenting on those characters, but I'm conscious I'd be hogging your Diary.
Remind me who Mick "The Crook" was please? Did you mean Mickey Cook, aka "The Clock"?
He got that nick as he was - supposedly - a look out man during burglaries, i.e., he kept watch.
No mention of Big Dave Smith, Thewy, bookiebasher, ("lucky Jim" aka Jamie Moult), Ian "The Belly" Oldershaw, or Kev the Burglar (he was a burglar...), or Jimmy 4 Fingers?
Do you remember trying to order a meal with that dreadful Valet woman? Strewth, you had to produce passport & all sorts to order a meal.
Happy memories & happy days, but somehow I don't think I'd like to do it again.

No, not Mickey Cook.
Come to think of it, it was Mick "9 carat Crook" can't remember his surname.
I would have played with the chaps you mention but don't really remember them. Kev the burglar? Was he friends with a guy from Derby called Sean?
I recall a Kev who was perfectly hideous.
Ah, Dave Smith. He was good friends with my mate from Derby, Dave Wojcik. I remember how shaken up Dave was when Dave Smith told him at Dtd one night that he didn't have long left.
They used to play roulette in Derby and give knowing nods to each other. On a regular basis the croupier would make an error with the pay out. Obviously they jumped all over it when it was short. Just as many times it was the other way too. They didn't make much of a fuss about it on those occasions.
Olga?
I liked her.
I also remember the yellow and red cards. You just about had to murder someone to get a yellow card so I dread to think what people must have down to get a red card.
Jimmy 4 fingers not also known as Greek Jimmy? Every time I bet he grabbed a huge amount of chips and just plonked them in the middle. At the time I thought that that was good poker. Posted by Jac35
Have you not thought about writing a book on your stories about poker or get a few players together and write stories of how poker used to be? Posted by Darkangel7

The place was rammed with Greeks & Cypriots.
Lots of "same village" stuff.
