Hi, I'm Matt237 (Matt obviously) and i'm currently studying Maths at Wolverhampton University. I am 19, a deaf survivor of Cholesteatoma, and proud BAHA user. Follow this thread for my journey into living a normal life and a quest to remain a winning sky reg into the future.
So my poker journey started in december, and after hearing some reviews on the community on the live shows i decided to get involved alot more for 2014. During this time I have met some fantastic people and improved my game dramatically from the point of aiming for min cashes in £2.20 MTTs to taking on some of the sites best MTTers for tournament wins in the late stages on big events. I also decided to join a team about 2 months ago - probably one of the best decisions i've made whilst on sky poker. Past 4 weeks have been awesome - feel like my game has reached a decent level, I've clawed out of sharkscope red from the damage done early on, and I am confident in discussing the game and some hands with others, and helping out the newer players. So a couple of things I would like to share with everyone on Sky Poker -
> Get involved in the community
> Get involved in the live shows
> No question/hand is too stupid to post - the clinic will help you improve 100%, even if its a horrible error
> Join a team - the people are fantastic. The Monday DTDs are a great game (Probably the hardest on here)
> Rail tournaments - Learn from the best
In my 6 months here i've made friends with lots of people in the community, and I haven't really introduced myself much. A bit about myself - Well my name is Matt, I'm only 18 and I live in a small village called Studley in Warwickshire. I learnt the game on a group holiday when i was 10 - Was very much so into card/strategy type games when I was younger and I always wondered what poker was and how to play. The adults let us play obviously without the shot aspect :-). Anyway I used to enjoy playing with friends throughout the teen years so I thought I would give online a crack, and I don't regret a single minute of it. I would love to give live poker a crack sometime - but i've put plans off a little bit afraid as I suffer from a nasty ear condition which has caused permanent deafness, just been worried I would mess something up.
Anyway I suppose I just want to say thanks to everyone here, the community is such a welcoming place, and has really made the game x100 times more enjoyable, specifically during the downswings. I'm not quite sure what I would do without the Sky Poker community now. Couple of special thanks I want to give out to on this thread: Sky Poker analysts and Mr. Orford, Pokertrev/FlyingDagg/Zoed/Daiw/DoubleAAA/K8LOU/LARSON7 and everyone else in TPT. Also to TommyD/DivsDreams/MattBates/THEROCK - learnt a lot from railing you guys.
Set myself a target of getting a top 10 finish in a main/mini event which I finally achieved last night in the rebuy. What a tournament that is by the way (Only played it for the first time). Tough field and great structure, I was well chuffed :-). So watch out for me in the future hehehe ;-)
I wouldn't worry too much at all about doing anything silly. Casinos are no longer the intimidating places that they once were. As I suggestion, I would say as you're not too far from DTD, that would be a great place to make your debut. They have buy ins that suit all levels and the tourneys around the £25 are aimed at people such as yourself. They actively encourage players new to the live game and the dealers will help you out with anything you're unsure about. Remember, plenty of the other players will be in the same boat as you. You don't have to fear making a mistake.
Spent my childhood living in Studley so nice to see someone representing the village so well. Good luck in the future by the manner of your post you obviously have the right temperament and attitude to do well at this game.
Matt didn't realise you were so young. Good to see your game is improving. With regards to live poker I know I have asked you already but our little weekend in Blackpool would be an ideal introduction if you could make it.
Also you mention you have a hearing problem and that is putting you off from playing live. There are many players who manage to play live with various disabilities and casinos are very accommodating these days, in fact they have to be. I know there are blind players who have someone at their side describing the action etc and I'm sure there are others with similar problems to yourself. Please don't let it put you off if you want to give it a go. Perhaps going in a group or with a friend would give you more condfidence.
Your a great contributor to TPT and we all hope you go from strength to strength
Hi Matt Are you aware of the UK Deaf Poker Tour? They had a leg at my local casino and it was great craic, really great people http://www.deafpoker.co.uk/ Posted by SolarCarro
I am aware but i'm not sure I qualify. Not the average deaf person me, more so inner ear wiped out than a nerve problem, so I can fully hear with a special aid. Glad to know the casinos are friendly though, I thought they could be quite intimidating
Anyway thought i could turn this into a bit of a diary. Intended the original post to be a thanks to the community, but could help even more and it's a bit of fun :-).
So tonight wasn't the best.
Main - Picked up an early head prize and got in 15bigs with AQ - Called by 88, couldn't hit. Standard. Mini - Picked up an early head prize again, got 9bigs in blind on blind with J8 - Called by A4, he flopped flush. Standard.
9.30bh - No good. Flopped set of 9s on 89J 2 hearts, setup for a turn jam on a brick and got called by 6 10 - Rivers the 7.
I played the cheap 19:45 deep stack alongside the main, as whilst i have a bigger BR now i am yet to find a decent schedule for my MTTs, and this game usually contains alot of my teammates, and there is a lot of play in to keep myself occupied. I ended up coming 2nd which i wasn't too happy with really - had a decent edge on villain but he was just going big big big. Had a couple of good hands from that tournament though. I finally managed to find a hero on one of those big shove moments - normally a spot where i just hand it over and save the stack for better spots but as villain was doing it often, i thought this was a good board to catch him

With the cash hand when he raises the river you have to ask yourself the following:
1) what is he raising with? Air? flush? set? Now if he's raising with air no point to reraise as he's not calling, so if he's raising a flush, will he call your jam with let's say the J spades?
Love this thread, Matt, "feel-good" threads are the greatest, I cba with all the moany-woany stuff these days. I must say I had you pegged as MUCH older than 18. You write older, for sure. Posted by Tikay10
Thanks for the words. Alot of people had me pegged older than 18 it seems, not sure why. As for the moany-woany stuff - moaning gets you nowhere in life. Just have to take everything on the stride and move on - makes you a stronger person. Sadly learnt that the hard way
So after an amazing day + night out yesterday, I've returned to the tables. Still yet to find a good Saturday schedule - Usually out following the footie.
I assumed you were young like from your profile pic so not shocked by that but deffo shocked by how long you've been playing the game... from what I've seen of you in the clinic etc you already seem to have a really good understanding of the game.
Gl at the tables, I'm sure you'll do well. Great idea to get out and play live too, people are always friendly (if you are) and its just great fun.
Fwiw, think you played both hands well. Backdoor flushes are unexpected when flop hasn't been checked through, I'd imagine he's raise/calling all sets and worse flushes if he has any so think the jam us good, just ul.

Cheers Paul. Was fairly certain he would raise sets/worse flushes on river which is why i thought jam was correct play. Fairly certain i'm quite friendly, get on with everyone on here and especially those in the teams so maybe live could be a aim this summer :-), will have to hope for some satellites into the UKPC mini eh?
So today i played 5 tournaments and got rivered in all 5. Coolers on my part but some weird calls for sure from villains that just ended up getting there. Ah well it's all fun :-).
Small lesson i learnt today, probably seems like quite an obvious one, is that people will call big jams with draws for bounties - even at level 2. Reason i jammed was because i knew i would get called in one spot - that flop has got to hit atleast one of the opponents' ranges. Think its a bit of a clever play but not sure how often it works overtime. Best way to play this out of my stack i believe - I'm not binning this pre flop because it will flop well multiway, and people will call a bit lighter considering my stack.

Great to see you not only doing well on skypoker Matt, but also enjoying it! I think that is the most important part I hope to see you at the felt soon!
Exam #1 (Maths M2) out of the way this morning, and a 3 week gap until the next so i thought i'd completely relax today and have a poker day. No stress really, I'm good with numbers and maths is what i'm continuing at Uni so the exam went pretty well. Mechanics side can be tricky though. No play last night as i wanted to relax prior to my exam.
Anyway standard monday schedule minus the main/mini/mega tonight. I completely forgot about the mega and I also wanted to try out another site. Ended up spinning the $18 tournament tokens into $161 so i was pretty happy about that. Used the designated $7 tournament and entered a turbo - won for $145.
Back to sky the DTDs again did not go very well. Not sure what is with these tournaments, I always seem to struggle. Yet my exits/bad loss pots are standard stuff. Saying that they are extremely tough games to play because of the high quality field. 1 hand really stood out from these today though - And it's something i have never ever seen before. I lost a pot to a 4 high kicker. I had to laugh really, I know i played it badly so no need to comment on that :-)

So then i played the £2,20 21;45 £250 Gtd speed. Cracking tournament this -
- Its cheap - Lower stakes so can capitalise on mistakes more - Half the players dont rebuy/add-on - Atleast £90 up top every night
Ended up coming 3rd for £34. Which for £4.40 and a very quick tournament can't complain really. Couple of lucky hands i got away with obviously it being a speed, and 1 tricky call i made for my life vs tight player on the bubble. Whilst it looks like an easy call, believe me i didn't love it. Usually like to make my own moves. :-)

- Exam 1/9 done. - +£17 on Sky. - +$150 elsewhere. - Had a lotta fun.
Can't complain. Time to chill out and watch the UKPC re run @ 1am. Turboes and master cash tomorrow :-)
No good. - Exited first hand of a £200 gtd set over set - Turbo lost a massive flip around 200 left 22 vs 33 - Mini my Aces outdrawn by K6 on draw heavy flop so had to get it in. Happens. 2 heads so 2/3 of buy in back - 20:05 BH lost QQ vs 9 5 os 6 off money. 4 heads for profit on buy in.
Cash was going ok - Then this happened as i clicked stand from all my tables..

I had to laugh really, I know i played it badly so no need to comment on that :-)
- Its cheap
- Lower stakes so can capitalise on mistakes more
- Half the players dont rebuy/add-on
- Atleast £90 up top every night
Ended up coming 3rd for £34. Which for £4.40 and a very quick tournament can't complain really. Couple of lucky hands i got away with obviously it being a speed, and 1 tricky call i made for my life vs tight player on the bubble. Whilst it looks like an easy call, believe me i didn't love it. Usually like to make my own moves. :-)
So to sum up todays work.
- Exam 1/9 done.
- +£17 on Sky.
- +$150 elsewhere.
- Had a lotta fun.
Can't complain. Time to chill out and watch the UKPC re run @ 1am. Turboes and master cash tomorrow :-)
- Exited first hand of a £200 gtd set over set
- Turbo lost a massive flip around 200 left 22 vs 33
- Mini my Aces outdrawn by K6 on draw heavy flop so had to get it in. Happens. 2 heads so 2/3 of buy in back
- 20:05 BH lost QQ vs 9 5 os 6 off money. 4 heads for profit on buy in.
Cash was going ok - Then this happened as i clicked stand from all my tables..
Look forward to the rebuy tomorrow. Played it for the first time last week and loved it, not because i came 8th but the structure made it a really enjoyable experienece.
