We've got some builders in doing some decking outside and plastering the bedroom.  They are currently arguing about how many shovels full of sand are in a bag to work out if the reason why they don't have enough sand is:

    a)  Builder A brought too few bags or;

    b)  Builder B is being wasteful while shovelling the stuff out.

I DON'T CARE, GO GET MORE SAND!!

Adam is coming, I think he will play the side events rather than the main but either way will be there for a beer or three!

You will if it's B. because it might not set properly and the plaster will fall off the walls!

lol - Ulrich is a real nice gent at the tables - and I believe he's the same in real life.  The highest I've been is circa  28,700' on Everest.  300-400'  short! :-( A queue at a 40' rock face called the "Hillary step"+frost-bite+approaching storms+lack of daylight meant retreating.  I've been twice but it's getting SO commercialised now e.g. it would cost me circa £25-30K  to get on an expedition, I doubt I'll be back.  I've got a pic of the queues this year taken by a mate which I'll post when I can find it.  (You could have a fab time in Vegas for that!) The BIGGEST thing scale-wise, strangely, is probably Mt. McKinley in Alaska.  It's "only" about 20,000' but it's "rise" base to top makes it the tallest peak (on land) in the world.  It is AWESOME!  Sorry to derail your diary - BUt you did ask! When I get started talking about climbing I'm hard to stop!! ;-)

Wowzers.  And here's me who has only ever taken the train up Snowdon and thought it was a bit chilly.  This is why I want my thread derailed, this is fascinating.  I want people to post interesting stuff in here or debate the good stuff/rubbish I come up with.  That's the whole point of it.

Any regrets not getting to the peak of Everest?  In other words if money was no object would you return?  What's the toughest peak/mountain or achievement you've made in climbing?

    AH! Snowdon...
    1. It may interest you to know that a friend of mine holds the record for the "ascent" of Snowdon in the "Snowdon Hill Race" in 1985.   Without  googling.... . take a guess at how long it took him to "run" up Snowdon?

    2. It may also interest you to know that he lost the Snowdon UP & down race!

    3. The winner of the up& down  for Snowdon also holds the record for the Ben Nevis hill race! Also, a "friend"!

Re Everest..I obvs had regrets at the time, and it took a lot of time to get over the frost-bite!  Even now I have tender bits....
Also, whilst training for Everest in the Alps a group of us were avalanched and a very good friend didn't make it.......that sucked..BIG time..

Prob/Def  won't go back to Everest,  I have been asked to assist as a guide on a few expeds but have refused.

Re. toughest... prob Ama Dablam or McKinley. Ama for technical BUT McKinley is more memorable as mate & I had to spend 6xdays in a tent riding out a storm.. and it was relentless..... That's..6 x days =144hrs = 8640mins!!  You get the picture!  He was also the very good friend above...

Wow! This post and your last one were really interesting. Think the most active thing I've ever done was a 10k fun run for charity and even that turned more into a 'fun walk'.

Great and thought provoking post Pad.

    1)  I went to Snowdon when I was much younger and I really have no idea even of the ball park.  Any guess I make will in all likelihood look ridiculous.  I'm going to say seven hours (stab and dark, can't even remember how big that mountain was, I just remember getting tired walking to the train station near the bottom, such a lightweight).

    2)  So let me see if I understand this.  He was the fastest up but wasn't the fastest for both the up and down together.  I know there's a cafe at the top IIRC, did he stop in for a full English ;)

    3)  Sorry to hear about what happened to your good friend.  I'm not sure I could continue with a activity I loved if I lost someone I knew and liked a lot while I was doing it.  I don't want to rake through bad memories but do you consider events like that to just be an occupational hazard of doing something you love?  Obviously intrigued with the mental strength you showed by being able to carry on to Everest, pretty certain I couldn't have shown that.  People like me all tucked up safe and warm really have no concept of how there are still places on this world which are extraordinary hostile and deadly.  Heck I can't imagine a place without a Starbucks within a 15 minute radius.

Will spend some time today Googling those mountains you have mentioned.  Fascinating stuff.

Cheers for posting this Pad. It is a very personnel account of your very dangerous hobby. Perhaps you could post some pics in the shed, as I for one would be very interested in seeing some. Or they might have to go in the 'tips' section ?

I enjoy reading this diary......not many HH's to read or disguised bad beat stories.

I've decided to only post HHs that relate in some way to a film.  The following is one of the final scenes in The Dirty Dozen.  Most men will remember this.  Mission complete, the survivors are speeding away.  Franko celebrates how he has survived......

    Sooooooooooooooooooooo yeah (copyright Izzard, E)

Off to Nottingham tomorrow.  Can't wait, should be a lovely weekend.  I will be packing tonight if I can find any clothes not covered in dust and grime from the intense building work at home.  If not then I'll just have to look like Oliver Twist for the weekend.

I've had a rush of blood to the head and booked somewhere away from the town centre, I'm in the Holiday Inn by the river.  In an executive room.  No idea what I was thinking, going to spend no time there, it looks well over priced and breakfast isn't included.  The latter isn't a problem, found a lovely greasy spoon in the city last time out and will be heading there for breakfast anyway.  I like to trot around the city at a SPT on the Saturday morning just to nose around and see what's what.  Some have been very interesting, some have made me run back for the security of my hotel room at the earliest instant.  I normally find a non-chain cafe, buy a paper, sit back and relax with a mug of tea and an artery clogging plateful of food.

Now I remember why I booked the Holiday Inn.  It was the closest on my search to DTD, am planning to walk there from the hotel.  Does anyone know if this is doable (not in terms of distance, can polish off that walk quick smart, but is there an uncrossable Motorway/A Road?  Can I walk by the river for a bit?).

    1.  The ascent record is 39 mins 47 secs set in 1985 by Robbie Bryson from Ireland.
    2.  Yes. He was passed on the way down by Kenny Stuart from Kendal.  Kenny was a MENTAL descender and recorded 62 mins 29 secs for the race!  Both records still stand today.  When you think the race is 10 miles with 3300' of ascent and Kenny was behind Robbie at the top, he ran the 5 x miles descent in 23 mins! i.e.circa 4mins 30sec per mile on a, then, rocky & stony path! Truly astonishing.  Also, Robbies ascent is under 8 x min miling!  Incidentally, Kenny also holds the Ben Nevis race record (10 miles & 4400' of ascent) in a time of 85mins 34 secs set in 1984.  I done quite a bit of hill running in the 80's & 90's to get "hill-fit" and got hooked.
    3. Unfortunately, an occupational hazard. I've known a few climbers who've died doing something they love.  RE  mental strength, it did take me a long time to recover.  Another friend who was with us gave up climbing completely, but for me the draw was just too great.
Enough of me.....are you mentally prepared for the weekend?

Do it mate, even if just to rail for the banter.  Most if not all people really enjoy the weekends.  Here's what to expect:

    1)  Anna is surprisingly tall.
    2)  Tikay isn't.
    3)  Daiboot will call you with any two regardless of how many drinks he's had.  However he calls quicker with any two after a few Guinness's.  Sober he at least considers folding.
    4)  At some point you will look at Dollie and think to yourself 'Yes, a pipe does make you look suave and intelligent.'
    5)  If you are chatting to the HitSquadies on the Saturday night, at some point UnclePat will disappear like a ninja.  Check the nearby roulette tables.
    6)  Maxally will require a drink on a regular basis.  Don't worry too much about remembering this as he will remind you.
    7)  At least five locals will come up to large groups and ask 'What's all this orange about?'

Ayop Tommy, see ur diary is back with a bang!

So I was @ Notts DTD last week for the £500 deepstack jobbie (played like a donk & bust early, ho hum).

I'm staying in the Ibis in the centre (cheapest 'brand' hotel in the city I believe).

I know they are both chains, but I reccomend both Carluccio's and Frankie & Bennie's if u fancy a delicious & less 'artery clogging' breakfast!

In terms of access to DTD itself - it's atrocious! Most un-friendly location for hotels and public transport (i guess it makes the rent cheaper), it practically forces u2get a cab if u don't have a car.

It is walkable though - u'll need to cross the motorway @ least once. I took a bus once from the centre which dropped me off next to an underpass on the motorway - I had to go through that & then still walk another 15mins, crossing the motorway again via a footbridge. That route did take me past sum Ferrari & Maserati showrooms so wasn't all bad.

    C u on Sat!

See, I said a mad stab in the dark would make me look silly.  When it comes to decending are there rules, i.e. you can't just unpack a sled/snowboard/glider and shoot down the bottom can you?

Am I mentally prepared for the weekend?  Getting there.  I have a patchy record at SPTs (one cash in the mains, a 4th a few years ago, cashed and FTed a couple of other side events).  I've usually been very successful at the cash action at a SPT but I doubt I'll be playing cash at DTD.  Half because when I bust I want to socialise and half cash action at casino is far easier than cash action at DTD.

Really hoping I don't have a similar fellow sat next to me at the final as I had at the 6-Max.  I'm not referring to Andrew1947 who was on my left, the gent is a delight and I really like him.  I am referring to the local who sat on my right.

    1)  Very late and absent from the table on various occasions - check
    2)  When losing a pot would tell you the exact river card which would have busted you - check
    3)  Body language of a basket of dirty washing - check
    4)  Continuously on his phone repeating the same sentence 'Get here by 6.'- check

Never did find out if the person on the other end did get there by six.  Last I saw of the fellow he was at the Blackjack table in the bar whispering to his mates and sneering at me.  Not a delight.

Looking back at my SPT play there have been some cooler exits, but there have been plenty of missed chances too.  I butchered the 6-max.  I went into the Bounty Hunter at Blackpool totally flustered through my own doing and deservedly got bust very early on.  I need to get my game head on and focus, when I do I can run deep.

    We shall see what happens.

As a local lad*, I can recomend Gingham Kitchen Cafe, Lincoln street.

It is a no frills cafe where I go everytime I visit Nottingham when I visit my ma. They actually put her tea with 4 sugars on the table before she orders anything! I went for a proper home cooked Sunday Lunch there last year when I was at the SPT Final. It aint posh, but somewhere you can go and read your paper and see how dreadful spurs were!

*was I on your table at the 6 max???

In Response to Re: Many Rivers To Cross. A Diary. : Ayop Tommy, see ur diary is back with a bang! C u on Sat!

    Cheers Jingle

Had a breakie at Gatwick's Frankie and Bennie's before flying to Vegas.  The food was deeeceee (or in English, pleasant).  Yeah for the 6-Max I began a walk from the city centre, got a little lost then got watched by two cop cars (it was matchday for one of Forest or County), gave up the ghost and got a cab.  I just fancied a little stroll, preferable by the river if it even goes in the right direction.  I'll look into it.

Last time I got to the club too early on the Friday night, managed to slam into the locked front door.  As a result I hid in the bar at the local bowling alley until I was sure the club was open.  The downside of this was a kids party suddenly joined the bar area at said bowling alley.  Suddenly I was a man in his 30s drinking alone while 20 odd unsupervised nine year olds ran around me.  Not a good spot.

    See you on Sat mate.

Haha, no.  This guy had won something like the Monte Carlo within the last few years.  Although he was yet to finish as high as second in the Primo, so you were ahead of him there.

Will try to get to the Gingham Kitchen, sounds like my kind of place.  Oh and these days I just look up how bad Spurs are on my phone, we're that dreadful the situation worsens several times a day.

DeeCee is, I think, kidz speak for decent.  I'm half guessing because being over 30 I no longer get the memo of the latest language changes.  The same happened to me for butters, long, dench and yard.

Wow, I'm only 25 and have never heard of any of the above terms... what's going on with the youth eh ;)

I know you aint playing the sidey tonight Tommy but I'm sure I'll see you at some point tonight for a pint. Gonna be setting off in just over an hour, still always feel like a little kid at christmas before SPTs.

Interesting point you made above... I was considering dipping my toe in the water with my first bit of live cash as long as the stakes aint super high, but your unwillingness to play has put me off a bit. You think the standard at DTD is gonna be far better than your average casino then?
