Made it back from Vilamoura, just.
Lots of turbulence and landed harder than ever before. Amid the screams we were treated to the RyanAir fanfare for an on time flight. Take it all back about RyanAir actually. Used the app and it's great. Felt a bit weird going to the airport without any paperwork. Passport and phone was all I needed. Excellent.
Really enjoyed the break. 6 of us there and not a cross word. They're all actually great. Even Jon. It was eventful at times but won't bore you all with that. Was a peculiar taxi ride that I might mention though.

Jon knows what he's doing with travel stuff. 6 bed townhouse in a fantastic location for £35 each for 3 nights is probably quite reasonable.

We drunk quite a lot and we played a bit of poker. First night with only two tables running, 5 of us sat at the same table which was good fun but probably not ideal. We played just as hard against each other as we did the locals but when we eventually bust the last local it felt a bit awkward. I ran super good on the night and had a nice win. Jimi went all in, a lot. He made a good few quid as well.

No poker Saturday. We got chatting  to a really nice local couple and they took us to a great pub which the tourists didn't frequent. Left about 5am I think.

Last night didn't go as well. I had a good start and was up over €100. I gave up my seat after a while as Palace was itching to play. Him and Jimi both lost a bit and then another seat became available. I wasn't too bothered but took it anyway and lasted one hand. Flopped a set and it was GG €200. Bah

Made a decent  profit overall which was a nice little bonus.

Had one of the strangest things that's ever  happened to me  when we left. The rain was incredible. We walked about 100 yards to the taxi rank and Jimi, King of boks, said how good we were running. There was one cab there. Just as we got there he shot off. The three of us then dashed to a phone box to get out the rain. After a little while we decided to walk back. Suddenly the tiniest car you've ever seen pulled up by us and a head popped out the window and asked if we wanted a taxi. It was an incredibly pretty little head and so very sensibly we jumped in. We said where we were going and immediately we noticed that pretty head was taking us the wrong way. We sobered up quite quickly as we realised that maybe jumping into pretty heads car wasn't that smart after all. Not to worry though. The young lady pulled up at what she thought was the destination we'd asked for. When we told her it was another place, she apologised and said she didn't know where that was and so she would  drive us round until she found a taxi for us. This she did and 2 minutes later we were at a taxi rank. We offered her some money for the trip which she refused to take despit our pushing. She wished us good night and drove off.
Still can't get my head around it.

There may have been a small issue with jackets this morning as well....

That trip sounds the nuts. Can you smoke in the casino there? Just googled it and it seems you can. Planning on quitting next year but might have one final smokey poker swansong before I do.
Also, do the dealers speak English? I've had a look at playing in Prague, Vienna (smokey swansong) and so on but always wondered about the language barrier in Europe and all I've come across is stuff along the lines of "The dealers speak English." Stupid question, but does that mean they speak in English the whole time - ie do they say, "Check or bet" or whatever - or only speak English when necessary? Cheers dude (that's right: cheers dude).

Don't be mean to Jon. 6 of us from 5 different airports took some arranging. It sounds as though I had the gentlest flight as well and the easiest journey home. Only took me 2:15 to get the 40 miles back from Birmingham.

Bearing all this in mind, I did feel a little guilty at winning a €400+ pot v him. But what can you do when they want to get it all in with Ace high pre?....

Hope you felt equally guilty when the identical scenario (I had the AK) arose in Newcastle recently between you & I, not that I'm bitter or anything.

I'm still amazed you found the call with your small pair.

Sad times for the Jackson and Lauder families last night as my Grandad passed peacefully. He was in no pain and we were all there.

I'm very sorry to hear that Paul, but "peacefully" is always a blessing, & sometimes a merciful release.

Played a mix of cash and dyms tonight
Was a boss at dyms. Won all my £22s and £16.50s. Not scoped but think I was something like 9/11 from all dyms.
To give an indication of how much of a whale I was at cash, I won £14 overall.
Joined a ridiculously strong mastercash table and played terribly. Really timid.
Had one interesting hand v the best diary contributor on here by a country mile. SR23.
Perfect spot for him to rip it with anything. I passed and hated myself.

Played one other table and in fairness was just unlucky in there. Flopped straight and lost. AA smashed up by the old limp/call 6x with K5 off.

Darn you Sky for cash triple points and dym double points.
    ....
Big game tomorrow. First proper test under McLaren.
Stevie Macs Black and White army still not working with the boy. We've moved on from Stevie Macs Black and Barmy. It's now Stevie Macs Black and likes Barnaby (his cousin)

'Bounce in a minute' has been banned by his Mother. Harry bouncing as high as he can on the sofa singing loudly hasn't gone down well

Jac35, you are too kind. Thanks man. Your diary is not too shabby either and always the first one I head to but I think it's about time for that Paul "I love life" Calf quote again.

Yeah, that table was stupid-tough for 10p/20p. These are the breaks, I suppose. Think I mentioned that hand in my diary a few seconds ago: it seems I misclicked the 3X, misclicked the 3-bet (honestly, I'm going to have to take this computer into the shop or something) and flopped the nuts. So, yes, very good fold, especially as the board was really connected/drawy.

I thought I'd reply to your question on this thread as I don't want yours to take a downward turn

Yes, I do drink at tables these days. I never ever drink at home so I make up for it at the casino.

It wasn't always the case. Live poker is how I started. All the games in The Grand Casino in Derby were bentt and and so I went to Gala in Nottingham where only the cash games were bentt.   Later I moved into Dtd where none of the games were bentt. So I drove

And then a wonderful thing happened.  Derby Genting opened. I quickly realised that I could combine two of my greatest passions. Live poker and drink. To make it even sweeter, the better of the Derby players still wanted to go to Dtd, because that's where good players play. I was quite happy to be in amongst the not quite so good players in Derby. Prizepools aren't so big but they're still decent enough. £30 rebuys with 30/40 players and £500 added to the pot still makes for a nice evening if you have a win

Live is the nuts. You meet all walks of life. Vittorio the retired men's hairdresser. La La  the elderly Asian gentleman who sits with the min at cash and never plays a hand. Jamie the scumbagg who conveniently forgets that he's borrowed money (yes, he did catch me once).

Live poker has taken me to such dreamy places as Broadway Birmingham, where Paul Jackson the real poker player resides. Aspers Newcastle where i played a pot with a poker star from the 70's. He still had all the lingo. "I'm gonna 6bet your asSs all in bro. All you can eat son. Call, and it's gonna be all over, baby"
I called and was a little surprised to be playing a pot a shade under 1k against Ace high. Fortunately I won. Not sure I've mentioned that story before

My first drinking at Derby casino was at the old one. I used to have a thing for blackjack and roulette. (Not done that for at least 15 years)
During Euro 96 they did a promotion. At the weekends it was 20p pints. I thought "I'm not falling for that one. They get us in here and then at half time we'll do it all at the tables"
So very smartly, on the Saturday, I only took £50 with me! The walk home sobered me up.
Sunday. I thought "they're not going to get me again" So I only took £20 with me. The walk home sobered me up.

That reminds me. Met a Brazilian girl born in 1997 last weekend. Made me feel super old.

    Back to poker
Similar to you, i take online reasonably seriously. Live is fun and I play with money I can just about afford to lose. I'm quite nitty with my bankroll online but happily sit with £500 in a cash game live. Live can be so swingy as well. In the long run some of our opponents play is good for us though so we have to take the beats.
Take last weekend. I gave fat surly Portuguese guy zero odds to call the turn with his q high flush draw. Flush came in and I ruled out flush. GG €400. He told my friends who were still at the table after I'd wandered off tail between my legs that he would have called any turn bet sizing.
Excellent! Oh, I'll never play him again! Not excellent! Bah! In fact.

Give action to get action. Firm believer in that. But do it with some sense. I splash about in a lot of £30/40 pots. La La has a love hate relationship with me. He loves it when I call v his aces with 89 for £25 but doesn't like it too much when I crack them.
La La turns up with £40 and folds every hand until he gets aces or kings, queens if he's feeling gambly. I'll give him a spin.
It's not without some logic either. I can see the other players licking  their lips. Drunk guy calls shoves with 89! Mmmmm
Oddly enough I tend to have the goods in the big pots when they call me though :)

I know this is very weak as an argument but I believe that being a little drunk can be helpful. You go with your gut more. Calling with 3rd pair for £70 isn't easy sober even if you really feel like it's ahead.

This hasn't been at all disjointed. Well batted if you've got through it all.

Gonna buy a pretty golf club this weekend that I don't really need. £20 off!
It's only £259.99 now. Wp me

I like this - good stuff. Not quite as good as 20p pints ("It's alright boys, I'll get these in") though.

Honestly, I don't think there is any need for that, gloating is not something that endows great credit on you.

I had Ad Kd on a splashy table where a Chinese lad (seat 7) was 4 betting every hand with air. It was THE perfect spot for me with AK suited in Seat 2. Then suddenly you want to get involved from Seat 1 (OOP, better players will note) with a small pocket pair. Bad etiquette on your part, that was MY spot.

I don't even remember it, or barely. Worse call I've ever seen.

Poker Trivia - that was the last time I ever 6 bet anyone. The memory is too painful. I had sat with £100 or whatever, run it up to £500, & then you pulled your little trick. Think I had to walk home, as I was completely busto.
