In Response to Re: Get in the Hole! 2014 Season! (The Open Championship):
As the self proclaimed king of 'left field' golf betting, I can't be out done by Neil and his Ryan Palmer bet, so have dug up one of my own. There is some history of relatively unknown Americans turning up at The open and seemingly coming out of nowhere to finishing top 5 or even winning the tournament. Todd Hamilton and Ben Curtis are fairly recent winners and players like Chad Campbell and Brandt Snedeker achieved top 5's when priced at 250/1. Particularly as the weather forecast seems to be suggesting a strong wind for much of the tournament, I think there's a case for going left field and checking out a few of those lesser named Americans who are comfortable playing in the wind. Not wishing to stereotype, but that theory suggests a good local Texan would fit the profile. This is by no means a conclusive list, but Texans I'm aware of and their best available prices: Jordan Spieth - 45/1 - massive talent and growing name in the world of golf so maybe not leftfield but dismissed by many this week, as not having the necessary experience to compete. To the contrary he declares that growing up in Texas he learnt how to control the ball flight in the wind and has links experience from his Junior days, he's only 20 so that's not that  long ago! Jimmy Walker - 100/1 - three time winner on the PGA Tour this season, but still a relatively unknown and underrated player to much of the British public, so a win for Walker would likely be leftfield in that it would be a good result for the bookies. Patrick Reed - 200/1 - Two time winner on tour including a World Golf Championship. Not short of confidence, ranked 30th in the world, infamously declared earlier this year that he thought he was a world top 5 player. Slightly leftfield as he is not a household name in the UK and the fact that he has been pushed out ot 200/1 means he is likely to be another one that would be in the bookies corner. Ryan Pamler - 250/1 - As selected by Neil, his best form as come in windy conditions, he  has a top 10 in The Masters, so can keep it together on the big stage. Lost a play off on the PGA Tour earlier this year. Played in the Scottish Open last week, so ticks a lot of the right boxes. Is known to get off to a flyer, so could be worthy of a FRL dabble. Chris Stroud - 400/1 - Now we are talking leftfield! Stroud has never won on the PGA Tour, but he is close and is having his best season to date. I recently came across an interview where he said he was looking forward to The Open, like many other Texans declaring that he hoped the wind blows and that he grew up playing on a course which was very similar to links conditions and thought he had a really good short game to do well at The Open. He also stated that he thought his first win was very close and was excited about having the chance to get that first win in The Open. Naivity maybe, leftfield potential definitely! Justin Leonard - 500/1 - Former Open winner, possibly struggles these days due to his lack of length. Still achieved two top 10's ealier this season and has made his last 5 cuts, though finished way down the field. Lack of length this week isn't likely to be an issue, so course and wind conditions will play to his strengths, maybe not the forlorn no hoper I originally had him down as this week and maybe MP33's bet wasn't as daft as I initially thought it was :)If the wind blows as forecast and any of these guys are making a move up the leaderboard it may well be worth keeping an eye on them for the 'In Running' market. Antepost I'm going leftfield and backing Chris Stroud - 400/1 ew first 6 . Good Luck all.

lol - U never know - 1 good round on 1st day or 2nd and its extra interest for watching it . Did 2 more bets today - 1 on Speith at 45,s and Bjorn at 89,s. Just rememebred Jimmy walker at 109/1 . Must have 10-12 players covered so will leave it for now apart from the £10 FB inplay on coral

lol - Got 5 players under par but none on 1st page of lederboard.

Decided to stick my in play freebet on my fav foreigner as i had him last year for the dbl with the Scottish so i should show a bit of faith :

Your bet has now been placed

    Single

    Phil Mickelson28/1The Open Championship 2014 -17/07/2014
    Stake £0.00 (Free Bet £10.00)
    Estimated Return:£280.00

As all my bets are on outright winners decided to have £10 at 5/2 that someone will shoot -8 or better today - Theres always one and if not i,m sure it will be close

EDIT : Just looking through tips on thsi thread and bets and i can,t see anyone winning who no -ones covered so someone has to win . Hopefully someone a few of us have backed

Got ooztenhouzen and Rose elsewhere but its to easy to get carried away with golf. You can make a case for most players , hence why the only betting i,ll be doing now is laying (hopefully0

For me the week leading up to The Open, is all about cramming in some research, be it course conditions, weather forecasts, tee times, recent player form, course form and keeping tabs on the movement in the market, trying to strike when the best odds are on offer. Monday, looked like being a day of sit and wait, but the first bet of Open week has been placed! Matteo Mannessero - 125/1 (6 places), considering he has already won 4 times on tour, it seems incredible than he only turned 21 in April tihis year. With all the hype the media like to build around young super talents, it seems equally incredible that Mannessero stays relatively low under the media radar. He minds his own business, makes a lot of cuts,  cruises along for a few months and then suddenly everything clicks into place and he strikes for the win. Last year he won the PGA Championship at Wentworth, that's a big deal at any stage in a  pro's career but to do it at 20 years old proves he is a special talent, with the confidence and belief to take on the very best on the biggest stages in golf. Last week without really being in contention, he was an eye catching 4th at the Scottish Open, so the links game is ready. In the 2009 Open, as a 16 year old amateur he finished tied 13th just 4 shots behind Cink and Tom Watson, so he's shown he can handle tough conditions in the worlds greatest tournament. I don't really understand why he appears to be friendless in the betting markets this week, well at 125/1 6 places, Matteo can be my friend for the week.

This is my man, back him every tourne !   150-1 yesterday happy hour on sky.

Spieth has taken all the attention away from him.  Spieth is ripping it up and has more of a personality, loves a little tantrum and loves abit of media and interviews.  Matteo seems like a quiet grounded guy who just loves to play golf !

Hope its windy and rainy tomorrow morning and the sun comes out for him

The early starters clearly had the advantage yesterday and looks like going off this afternoon, that same group of players are going to have an even greater advantage today.

For me, Baldwin's already gone and needing a big round but going out in the worst conditions, probably means Willett has also gone.

Well placed but in the wrongside of the draw I've got Lowry and Cabrera-Bello, which suggests they had two of the best rounds of the day yesterday, but can the beat the weather again today?

In the right side of the draw I'm still hoping Casey and GMac can get back in to it on Day 2.

On the plus side, I'm happy with Mannesero (worried with a 1.05 tee time, he may still catch the worst conditions), Fowler and Walker.

I said (to myself), that if Stenson goes out to 20/1 I'd have a saver on him, well he's now 45/1 and with an afternoon tee  time, 6 back is by no means out of it, but going out in probably the best conditions, what will Rory do today, Jim Furyk and Sergio are looking good and will Tiger's game hold up in the wind? I'll leave Henrik in the wait and see bracket.

Trying to preempt the weather and exaggerating the interest today, I've had a few 'End of Round Leader' bets for day 2.

    Jimmy Walker - 35/1

and speculative ew's on Hunter Mahan and Kristoffer Broberg at 125/1

The cut mark is currently +1, I wonder what it will be at the conclusion of play, +4 or even +5?

Fascinating stuff, love it, watching the worlds greatest golfers playing links golf and struggling in the wind.

I've done no research this week at all, I have been busy with other things and just not really had my head in the golf world for a while now. I had a quick skim through the odds, and I saw Ryan Moore was as long as 150/1, I thought he was in decent form, and after checking on the PGA website he has indeed finished 5th and 7th in his last 2 tournaments. As I went to place the bet his odds changed from 150/1 right down to 80/1! So I had to take 125/1 from a different bookies.  Like I said, no research, so I'm just going to stick with the 1 bet this week.

Phhh, one pick from 156 players, you show off!

Still a long way to go, but very impressive ONE bet at the half way stage.

    Good Luck

Haha, No prizes for half way though! And there seems to be a very good curly haired kid running away with it anyway.

I didn't post in here but had a pre event bet on Woods at 23/1. So gg that.

Just had 2 £10 Win bets on Schwartzel and Oosthuizen at 26/1 + 28/1. Both 6 shots back and are in the same group.

Went from having 11 players on the first 2 pages of the leaderboard on thursday to 1 by the end of Staurday. Not a bad today with 6 players in top 15 but its all relative now with Rory streaking away. He,s 1/5 now to win it.

Nice bet stuarty . I just didn,t think he,d keep it togethor for 4 rounds and unless he capitulates tommorow can,t see any other result. just  a shame the weather has played such a big part (yet again at the open) . Would have been interesting to see Rose and Mcloroy swap places for their T off times. He still might have been in front but at least it would have been intersting tommorow. After throwing that big lead away in the Masters on final round, was it 2 or 3 years ago i can,t see him doing it again

Didn,t agree with the eaarly start today - just because there "may " have been thunder. It just meant Rory got the same weather as everyone else. I was hoping the wind would get up again and play 3 or 4 shots harder than the morning players like the first 2 days.

Because i bet on betfair i can,t do Ew but in future think i,m going to start betting on the top 5 or top ten market

Latest odds for last day (Got 5 players there , the best of which is Victor Duduisson. gotta feel for justin rose. he,s played as well as anyone. Just got the wrong side of the draw

    Ok

At least its a bit off interest for tommorow. The only reason i,ve never backed him is i heard from a relative he was a bit arrogant since he was a teenager - Someone who worked at the club he grew up. Apparantly he thought he was the bees knees and used to take libertys there

Oh well it seems even Rory can't throw this one away, - too much an easy course in calm conditions. Bets wise it seems just one 'after the lords mayor show' punter is on Rory. - How foolish do we all feel now??

Personally I (and Mr Wynne I hope to) made a decent profit from the FRL market. And I (and Mr Wynne too again) should pick up a place return with Sergio, and have varying outside chances with Gmac, Mannesero and Gallagher.

I did take the 15/2 available about Sergio 'without Rory' yesterday morning, so at least I have something to get excited about should El Niño find his putting boots at last.

Nice bet . whats the FRL?

I thought Sergio looked alittle nervous once he got within 2 shots. Kept stepping back from his ball and got a cpl of good brks before that bunker shot

can,t beleive only 1 person on here had Rory. It seems easy now looking back but then again it always does after the event

Stand up for the Ulster man

Nice just thought it was Rorys time.

We played against Holywood Golf club when he was around 10 and he was making there junior team at that age.

Had Mcdowell as well £1 each he nearly got me a place.

PS I told the wife could have half if he won,   I am a dope

oh well I said it would all go downhill from Thursday at 11am , however still made a nice profit thanks to Fowler and Furyk, just a pity Karlsson couldn't hang on for a place as well.

Well done all that made a profit. Looking forward to this week now, I tend to do a lot better in these weak fields. Not seen one as weak as the Russian Open for a while, so that's good I guess.

Had a bit of research this morning and I think I've already picked out my bets this week. Just need the bookies to wake up now.

    Canadian Open

Jim Furyk (Really think he has a great chance this week) 14/1
    Hunter Mahan - 28/1

From the sublime to the ridiculous this week.... Is Yevgeny playing?? I like my annual 'what's he gonna score in his 1st round' jibe.... As for me, just the one bet pre event. I find any course that Hoey plays well, also suits Horsey. So it's David Horsey ew 28/1 for me.

I've succumb to temptation in The Canadian Open. I've gone with DJ win only 14/1 Betvictor. And a man I've hardly heard of, but has fab recent course form, William McGirt ew 1st six 66/1.

    Gl all

The worst score last year over 2 rounds was James Ferraby at +32. He is in the field again this year, so Yevgeny has competition!
